Review: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

I found myself thinking "wow!" as I watched the cutscenes which got the storyline going The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a strange choice to kick off the Zelda 30th anniversary year.

Solid; tried and tested game engine; Great musical score; Midna; Lovely HD upgrade

Been there; done that feel to dungeons and puzzles; Slow down on GamePad; Real lack of atmosphere

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Review

holds plenty of memorable moments that've stood the test of time, and Nintendo's high-definition update does a lot to modernize its look and feel. This cleaner, fresher presentation is still noticeably and disappointingly flat in some ways, but just past that are some of the best puzzles and...

Excellent dungeons; Epic story; Improved controls; Amiibo customization

Lackluster graphics

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD preserves the best and worst of the 2006 original. Its opening can be tedious, but it's worth enduring so you can experience such a magical world.

Gorgeous art and music perfectly preserved on Wii U; Strange characters make for one of the series' best stories; Later dungeons are inspired challenges

Constant interruptions during play over-explain basic game features; Fragments of Light quests are the worst

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Review

For the most part, The Legend of Zelda has had an almost perfect track record when it comes to scoring well with critics. Titles such as Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and The Wind Waker stand out

Wonderful upscaled visuals; Despairing and dark story; Great cast of charming characters; Various improvements to suit Wii U

Occasional minor graphical glitches; RIP hack-n-slash Wii Remote controls

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Review

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is another stellar re-release of a true adventure game classic. It hasn't aged as well as its predecessor, but no one should have expected that due to the more realistic art style utilized here.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

History hasn't always been kind to Twilight Princess. Lauded at launch for its return to a 'grown-up' style after the cel-shaded, cartoon visuals of The Wind Waker, it's now dismissed by some fans as a flawed, forgettable reworking of the legendary Ocarina of Time.

Crisp full HD presentation brings the best from strong design; An epic take on the more traditional Zelda; Excellent dungeons; gadgets and boss battles; Improvements remove some pain from the game

Vestigial Wii showcase sections with dodgy controls; Prone to padding

The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD review – the legend of?Midna

It's certainly not the best entry in the Zelda series, but a good quality remaster and the presence of Midna still makes this one worth returning to.

In terms of gameplay and dungeon design the game gets very little wrong; Very large game world, with lots to see and do; Midna is great and the remaster itself is excellent

Very few new ideas, and an unhealthy obsession with trying to recreate the magic of Ocarina Of Time; Bland, and occasionally downright ugly, art design; Still too long and awkwardly paced

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD review

Even though Twilight Princess HD is haunted by the shadow of Nintendo's NX, it still ranks as a Wii U essential. Its graphical makeover brings a new clarity to Hyrule's most mournful incarnation, while the addition of Hero mode means Zelda devotees won't breeze through their hardened surroundings.

More detailed textures improves overall aesthetic; Incredibly well-designed and enjoyable dungeons; Brilliant characters engage you throughout

Main game can be too easy at times; Bosses often don't live up to the dungeons; Some areas of brown dullness in the world

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Every single Zelda game leaves a distinct mark on fans, but we think we can state that, without a doubt, 2006's Twilight Princess was one of the most special entries in the whole series.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is an excellent addition to the Wii U library. We do acknowledge that it's a series entry that has its critics, with them often citing a lack of revolution from the Ocarina of Time template, in particular.
