The Escapists Review

Mouldy Toof Studios teamed up with Team 17 for The Escapists (originally released on the PC) and in terms of gameplay the latter provides a sandbox experience inspired by the likes of Prison Break (one of my favourite TV series); with the objective being to escape from each of the six available...

The Escapists

The Escapists is a downloadable only video game on the Personal Computer (Steam), and Xbox One. Family Friendly Gaming was provided a copy of The Escapists on the Xbox One. The Escapists has a top down view like The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past.

The Escapists

The prison theme is under-represented in games, and a welcome change from the more oversaturated motifs we're often subject to (war, I'm looking at you). 'The Escapists' does have a lot of good ideas. It can't quite deliver on many of them due to a slow interface, weird AI and other design choices.

Plotting An Escape Is Tedious Work

Concept: Craft materials, muscle up, and devise a plan to escape from secure prisons Graphics: The pixelated graphics are simplistic, trying to capture a retro feel. That's cool for the character models, but the prisons are too sparse Sound: The soundtrack gets the job done, but is overplayed,...

The Escapists review

A brilliantly unique indie escape-'em-up that combines stealth, strategy, and simulation to great effect, but you'll need saint-like patience to get the most out of it.

Colourful; fun 16-bit graphical style; There's a lot of depth buried in the simulation; Can be genuinely tense at times

Can be slightly daunting at first; Guards are a bit eager to beat you up; The in-game clock could be slightly faster

The Escapists,The Escapists (Xbox One) Review

Loads of gamers would probably like to leave behind the illness or confinement they feel in the real world, and video games themselves allow that, but something about The Escapists irks me.

Strong graphics; sound; and map design; Diminutive prisoners with tough-sounding names; Variety of different means of escape; Different day jobs; day/night cycle; Interacting with both prisoners and cops/administration

Shivs; shivs everywhere; Different day jobs; day/night cycle

The Escapists (Xbox One)

There's not much of a back story in The Escapists. Little explanation is given as to why you start off in a minimal security prison, but you're there and it's your goal to break out.

Amusing dialogue; random encounters; challenging escapes that get harder as you progress in the game

Xbox One version does not get the DLC offered to the PC users; dated graphics and clunky interface make this game harder to navigate

In The Escapists, your goal is really quite simple: escape. With that little goal in mind, you are turned loose, or as loose as you can be while in prison, to devise just how you're going to accomplish it. However, you have to be extremely careful about how you go about that accomplishment.
