Works great! I have this in a home server setup to backup files and also use this as a file server for other family members.

Opened, added spinners, and boom, system is ready to use.
At a mere £458 exc VAT for a diskless RackStation RS812, Synology looks to have done a fine job of making its rack NAS solution affordable to SMBs and workgroups. It also aims to address some of the shortcomings of its predecessor, the RS411. The RS812 is well built, with a solid metal chassis.
Kitguru says: An excellent NAS for a small business/office environment.
well built; great internal components including Seasonic power supply; solid performance; low price point
Performance won't suit a demanding environment

Great little Linux box. Assisted RAID-10 setup worked flawlessly; stability has been incredible. Mine is running CrashPlan and other Java services, as well as BIND9, HTTPD, and syslogd. Used two 3rd party (G-Skill) RAM modules purchased from Newegg to increase to 4GB
No redundant power supply and RP model costs ~$600 more; Web management interface is quick but only moderately intuitive until you get used to it
This must be one of the longest running "tests" we've done on any NAS (and we have reviewed quite a few!)... We received the RS812 from Synology in November last year and now finally 11months later we get to write a review on it! Why the delay and what good has come out of it?
