I purchased the DS420+ to replace a 5 year old Netgear unit that was beginning to play up and ultimately incapable of backing up reliably to my preferred cloud backup solution, Backblaze S3. Initially I considered rolling my own as I do like to tinker but the more I looked into it, the 4 bay Synology being small and compact with everything I desired baked in just made more sense. Opening the Synology was a somewhat underwhelming experience: the hardware is all plastic, with pretty chintzy drive trays. Very good value, on special. Have loaded it with Seagate Ironwolf 8TB disks (3 so far) and am impressed with its capabilities. Initial setup quick and easy. Optional software packages cover good range but package selection and configuration is a personal thing and best not rushed! No issues so far, but have had to do some "digging" to sort out exactly what each package does and how best to configure it to suit my use case.

Recommended by PB Tech as a solution for my small business backup strategy, which includes backing up all my cloud services and creating secondary Time Machine folders. I'm generally very happy with this NAS. It is quiet and incredibly versatile. Some of the setup is quite daunting for non-IT people, but the software and online support and documentation is very well set up. This one will hopefully be a central part of our small business for a long time to come, and I can see us expanding the Synology NAS 'family' in due course.

The device can get pretty noisy with large TB drives. Also a month after I purchased it, the 920+ which comes with more ram went on sale for the exact same price... Owch.

I recently bought the 420+ Synology NAS for our astronomy society. I already own the 920+ and this little brother seems just as capable. Easy to setup and get running. Would def recommend.
