I had too many frustrating days trying to set up PC back up's w the provided software. Installed 3rd party software to my PC and it worked great! Only 4 stars because of the tech difficulties. (I am using Win 7 Home - NOT Premium, so external back up wasn't a PC option).

Synology DS218 review

Synology is an established brand in home and small business Network Attached Storage (NAS). The company makes a huge range of hardware for all segments of this market, ranging from single drive devices up to massive rack-mounted systems that can accept hundreds of drives.

I installed 2 WD Red 10 TB HDD into the enclosure and it works a dream as a NAS for the whole house, already used 6TBs. This is my second synology device, previous is DS214 play. The Synology mobile app is a bit basic but does the basic stuff well.

Synology DS218 review: A budget business belter

All the software features of a high-end NAS at an attractive, entry-level price

Simple setup and configuration; Good value; Good range of business apps

Poor selection of ports

Synology DS218 review: Maximum features for minimal cost

Performance in our CrystalDiskMark sequential and 4K random read tests was solid, but keep in mind that read and write speeds with larger files are relatively slow. Nevertheless, the Synology DS218 is all about maximum features for minimal cost.

Flawless as a media server; Expandable

No HDMI port

Since being announced last month , I've been trying out Synology's DS218 in my home office. The early days of Network Attached Storage (or NAS) were pretty uninspiring. I remember a Lacie hard drive in some sort of enclosure with an ethernet port and it was as slow as treacle.
