From Giant to Dwarf… Without a doubt, fans of Supcom would expect to find a game of similar scale, scope and options with its predecessor. Unfortunately, the first thing that strikes you with SupCom2 is that this is not the case.

Unit command interface; performance and stability

Small scale; uninspiring plot; bad graphics and sound; departure from the original formula

To be brutally honest this game is a shameless rip off of Total Annhilation, but with about half the choice of units and maps. The graphics, as expected nowadays, are pretty cool and detailed. There are some nice details on the shield generators and the bigger experimental units.

In this sci-fi strategy game players are placed in charge of one of three nations' military units piloting an ACU. Players are charged with completing goals and more importantly not being defeated.

Chris Taylor is a name known greatly to me. It's not just because it's my own name but because I grew up playing titles such as Total Annihilation and Dungeon Siege. Chris is a pretty influential guy in the gaming industry and there's good reason for this.

Controls are great for a console RTS; A lot simpler than most other RTSs; Online is a lot of fun

No variety to anything; Doesn't look good at all; AI is terrible

Real time strategy (RTS) games seem to have struggled to make an impact when it comes to console gaming and it would be fair to say that the game style has always been best suited to the PC format.

As far as real-time strategy games on consoles are concerned, Supreme Commander 2 is a relatively fun affair. The simplified resource and upgrade management creates a more accessible experience for those typically intimidated by games of this genre.

Supreme Commander 2 is set 25 years further into the future than the original, featuring numerous game enhancements, an in-depth campaign mode, online multiplayer and a unique storyline, the game represents a new dimension in RTS gaming.

A good game for beginners in the strategy genre, but for a title from someone of Chris Taylor's background, you can't help but feel a little underwhelmed. Supreme Commander 2 should have been the game that really offered us a challenge, however, we never found it.

In the late 1990's two real-time strategy games came out around the same time, Total Annihilation and Dark Reign. Dark Reign became an obscure title that most people have forgotten about, while Total Annihilation became wildly popular.

Supreme Commander 2 is a strategy game that plays very well for the casual market, but may turn off the hardcore fans of the original title. However, make no mistake that this is still a fun game with enough depth to be worthy of your time.
