Sony Xperia Z (T-Mobile) review: Good looks only take this phone so far

Sony hopes to tempt potential phone shoppers with the Xperia Z's unique mix of durability, sexy design, and a powerful camera. Now available for preorder at T-Mobile for $99.99 down (and 24 payments of $20 per month) and hitting stores on July 17, it's billed as the company's top mobile device and has a lot to prove. Sadly, the Xperia Z's pokey imaging system and short battery life can't stand up to the likes of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, both sold by T-Mobile for the same up-front price. Those competing gadgets add up to better buys, that is unless you absolutely must have a water- and dust-resistant smartphone.

The Sony Xperia Z makes sense if a water-resistant design and excellent photos are a priority, but skip it if you demand blazingly fast performance and long battery life.

The Sony Xperia Z boasts a thin, attractive design that’s also dust- and water-resistant; It’s equipped with a big, bright screen and 4G LTE, takes great pictures, and has sharp call quality.

The Sony Xperia Z’s battery life is short, its camera is slow, and its processor is not as peppy as those found in other flagship phones; Its glossy chassis attracts fingerprints easily.

Short life

It worked wonderfully until water found its way into the hole left by the separated glass, now the phone is completely dead. I'll miss having a water resistant phone, but if the craftsmanship is so poor that it falls apart from its own heat while under light to moderate use, no gaming whatsoever...

I have a previous review with quite a bit of praise of the phone; I loved every bit of it while it worked with the only complaint being the camera compresses the 13mp a lot

construction is not made to last, the phone runs pretty hot and it has managed to make the glue holding the back glass detach in under 3 months, and now there's a large gap leading right to the phone's internals; the water resistance is gone entirely.

At long last, the Xperia Z is coming to the states. It was the most appealing phone at CES back in January, with its good looks and waterproofiness. But that was half a year ago, and since then the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 have made quite an impression.

Sony Xperia Z (T-Mobile)

T-Mobile customers now have an embarrassment of riches: In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S4 , HTC One and the iPhone 5 , the carrier now offers the Sony Xperia Z. Available for just $99 up front, Sony's latest smartphone sports a bright 5-inch 1080p display, two excellent cameras that can shoot...

Design shrugs off water; Excellent 13-MP camera; Floating apps come in handy; Vivid screen

Boxy design makes one-hand use difficult; Narrow viewing angles; Back gets hot; Slower CPU than HTC One and S4

Sony Xperia Z (T-Mobile)

Sure, the Apple iPhone 5 may have a gazillion apps, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 may have countless cool features, and the HTC One may be built out of a block of aluminum, but one dip into the pool, one slip into the kitchen sink, or one drop into the toilet (gross) and they're history.

Beautiful, water-resistant design; Sharp display; Good size for a big-screen phone

Mediocre call quality; Dated processor; Average battery life
