The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a powerful unlocked phone that combines a vivid 4K HDR display with the latest Snapdragon processor and strong audio capabilities, but falls short in other areas. It's hard to take your eyes off of the unlocked Xperia XZ Premium ($799.99). It's the first phone with a 4K HDR display, packing a staggering number of pixels into a 5.5-inch panel. It also has a powerful Snapdragon 835 processor, high-resolution audio, stereo speakers, and a waterproof build. That said, the overall design is a bit dated compared with competing flagships that pare down the body while expanding screen size, and the phone's fingerprint sensor is disabled for US users. There's also little 4K HDR content available to take advantage of that gorgeous screen. The XZ Premium offers a lot to like, but the Samsung Galaxy S8 remains a more well-rounded alternative and our Editors' Choice. Excellent display with HDR and 4K. Likes the design on the phone. Personally, bez bezels are no worries. The phone is also really fast but a great camera with super slow motion. + battery time + good screen + camera with super slow motion

Is the Sony Xperia XZ Premium as aggressive, forward-looking and dynamic as the Samsung Galaxy S8+ or LG G6? Nope. The design is familiar, and it crams in fewer screen inches per square inch of phone. As with the Xperia Z5 Premium, the 4K screen doesn’t seem essential, and it’s actually the eye-popping colour that slaps you across the face more. Similarly, all the extra camera megapixels don’t amount to much, with much less consistent results than a Samsung Galaxy S8 or iPhone 7 Plus. It’s a good job, then, that there are some fun tricks under the hood, such as the ultra slo-mo video shooting and neat little side orders like Sony LDAC support for wireless headphones. All that colourful glass is sure to turn a few heads, too. What you're left with is a phone which adds up to less than the sum of its parts. If Sony could just get a bit of consistency they'd be on to a winner here, but as it stands, the XZ Premium just doesn't quite compete with the best phones where it really matters.
