The Sony Xperia XZ Premium goes all in with features that the company dabbled in with recent offerings, making it a worthy consideration for anyone that is willing to overlook the lack of a fingerprint reader and basically non-existent carrier availability in the States.
- Sleek design Powerful 4K display Top-notch performance Great audio experience Lightweight software is snappy and smooth Powerful Auto camera Dedicated camera button
- Design is all too familiar No fingerprint reader in western units Software ROM cripples Android Pay Battery life average overall
If one were to look at the Sony XZ Premium from an aesthetical standpoint, the phone undoubtedly sits in our books as arguably one of the prettiest (shiny, even) flagship smartphones that Sony has to offer.
- Solid build
- 4K HDR display really brings out the colors
- Outstanding battery life
- Fast and snappy performance
- Motion Eye camera still requires some refinement
- Thick bezels at top and bottom of display
- Back of phone is a fingerprint magnet
Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: more than a one-trick pony?
The Xperia XZ Premium is worth putting on your wishlist thanks to its sheer power and a fantastic camera experience that approaches (but doesn't quite surpass) Samsung and Apple's best.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium review
Is the Sony Xperia XZ Premium as aggressive, forward-looking and dynamic as the Samsung Galaxy S8+ or LG G6? Nope. The design is familiar, and it crams in fewer screen inches per square inch of phone. As with the Xperia Z5 Premium, the 4K screen doesn’t seem essential, and it’s actually the eye-popping colour that slaps you across the face more. Similarly, all the extra camera megapixels don’t amount to much, with much less consistent results than a Samsung Galaxy S8 or iPhone 7 Plus. It’s a good job, then, that there are some fun tricks under the hood, such as the ultra slo-mo video shooting and neat little side orders like Sony LDAC support for wireless headphones. All that colourful glass is sure to turn a few heads, too. What you're left with is a phone which adds up to less than the sum of its parts. If Sony could just get a bit of consistency they'd be on to a winner here, but as it stands, the XZ Premium just doesn't quite compete with the best phones where it really matters. - Plenty of power
- Decent battery life
- Camera not close to the very best
- Bulkier than the Android competition
Review: Sony Xperia XZ Premium
The burger, the crab, the puttanesca and the ribs? Tell them it's your Birthday, when it's actually just a Wednesday? This sort of excess is what the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is about.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: 4K flagship has stacks of specs appeal
Ultimately, there is plenty to love about the Sony XZ Premium, especially if you're a Sony fan and you're into that flat-slab design. It's a flagship device with some great features, some of which can't be found elsewhere, but in the current fabulous smartphone world, it's sadly just not quite as...- Great 4K display with HDR technology
- Good battery life
- Super slow-motion feature is excellent
- Good overall software experience
- Waterproofing
- Cheaper than some other flagships
- Design hasn't moved on much
- Camera isn't as good as competition
- Display doesn't manage well in super bright conditions
- Occasional lag in performance
Sony Xperia XZ Premium: A fast phone with a dated design
Sony Xperia XZ Premium: A great smartphone but it isn't as good as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and is now more expensive- Very fast performance
- Doesn't smudge
- despite glass front and back
- Love that 960fps slow-mo funtion
- Dated design
- Sharp corners rip holes in your pockets
Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: Premium yes, but competition is ahead
Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a top notch phone, there's no doubt. The camera ticks the right boxes, the overall UI and performance is not bad, though it could be smoother. As far as premium goes, this phone covers it all, offering the complete package.
Fantastic mobile!
Fantastic phone! Screen is out of this world! Camera is perfect! Operation is faster than most! In my view much better than Samsung A8. An absolute joy to use!
Things get tricky when you start reviewing a flagship smartphone. Testing the limits of cutting edge technology is not as easy as it may seem, and when you're creating that offbeat technology, all of that difficulty multiplies a hundred times.
- Eye catching form factor
- Excellent Performance
- Vibrant 4K HDR Display
- Smooth User interface
- Good battery life
- Fantastic slow motion video
- Shiny surface may attain unneeded attention
- Terrible low light camera performance
- Requires minute software improvements
- Oversaturated display
- No infrared Blaster
