Sony FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens - Brand New review

In terms of 35mm-format “full frame” cameras, the 50mm lens offers a natural perspective on the world, a view similar to the human eye. Thus we have the ubiquitous “standard lens” which has been a reliable workhorse as long as the format has existed.

Sony FE 50mm F2.8 Macro Review

Sony has several lenses in the 50mm range for its full-frame mirrorless camera system. The FE 50mm F2.8 Macro ($499.99) is pricier than the FE 50mm F1.8 , but a better performer optically. It offers 1:1 macro focusing and doesn't show any distortion, but because of a design that extends the barrel to focus close, it can be slow to lock onto a target. The Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8ZA is our favorite standard angle lens for the Sony system priced under $1,000, and the Sony Zeiss Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA is your best bet if you've got a huge budget. Design The FE 50mm F2.8 Macro ($548.00 at Amazon) is pretty compact lens. It measures in at 2.8 by 2.8 inches (HD) and weighs 8.3 ounces. The front element accepts 55mm filters, and the glass itself is recessed to the point where a lens hood isn't necessary. It's not far off in size from the FE 55mm ($998.00 at Amazon) (2.8 by 2.5 inches, 11.2 ounces), and much smaller and lighter than the FE 50mm F1.4 (4.3 by 3.3 inches, 1.7...

The Sony FE 50mm F2.8 Macro is a compact, sharp macro lens, but its autofocus motor is on the slow side.

Excellent edge to edge sharpness; Minimal distortion; 1:1 magnification; Weather-sealed design; Focus limiter function

Slow autofocus; Omits optical stabilization; Short working distance

Sony FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro review

It started with the FE 50mm f/1.8 , which we reviewed (and quite liked). Costing nearly £250, this lens is still around £100 more expensive than its Canon and Nikon DSLR counterparts, but it is a step in the right direction.

Great, but with a few problems.

I love this lens, it's not without its problems but you can get some great results with it. Indoors you will most likely need a tripod or a good light source to get close ups, outside you can get the shutter speed high enough that handheld shots are fine, even at narrower apature settings.

Works amazing for macro work

Works amazing for macro work. Though you still have to get fairly close and the 50mm doesn't seem to have much use outside macro as I already have the Sigma 40mm.

Good for what I was looking for

I've tried a little macro photography in the past with point and shoot cameras, so with the purchase of a A7r2 I got this lens after some research to try macro with the camera without too much out of pocket cost. So far it seems to do what I want. Mostly snowflakes and flowers.

1 Although the design is dust and moisture resistant, absolute protection from dust and moisture is not guaranteed.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro ( SAL-50M28 ) - Review / Test Report

The build quality of the Sony lens is good but in relation to its price tag there's too much plastic involved in the construction. The broad rubberized focus-ring operates quite smooth but it's also somewhat wobbly. In AF mode it is decoupled from the focus gear.
