I use this for floral photography in the field. It's so "right on". It's fast enough to catch a clear shot of a flower on a windy day..

This is overall a great lens. It produces very sharp images and is fast enough to do handheld shots at lower ratios than 1:4 magnification. For anything 1:1 through 1:4, I'd highly recommend a tripod as shutter speeds will quickly drop.
Very sharp photos
Can be slow to focus; even with limiter
"I have been able to capture great images with this lens. Great focus and range."

The reason I bought the Sony SAL50M28 lens was to get clearer magnification of small objects indoors with the assistance of two photo lamps from a light box kit. This lens is just somewhat sharper than the comparative Minolta Maxxum 50mm F2.8 lens.
Sony quality, great photo. Need a tripod when using the Marco.
A classic fixed focal 50 mm lens is quite a simple optical construction, usually consisting of 5-6 elements. In the case of the1.7/50 model, produced by Minolta, it used to be 6 elements in 5 groups.
very good image quality starting up from the maximum relative aperture; negligible distortion; well-corrected coma and astigmatism; exemplary work against bright light; correct work of autofocus; good quality of barrel
a bit too high vignetting by f/2.8; chromatic aberration at the maximum relative aperture could have been lower
The build quality of the Sony lens is good but in relation to its price tag there's too much plastic involved in the construction. The broad rubberized focus-ring operates quite smooth but it's also somewhat wobbly. In AF mode it is decoupled from the focus gear.
I've tried a little macro photography in the past with point and shoot cameras, so with the purchase of a A7r2 I got this lens after some research to try macro with the camera without too much out of pocket cost. So far it seems to do what I want. Mostly snowflakes and flowers.
Works amazing for macro work. Though you still have to get fairly close and the 50mm doesn't seem to have much use outside macro as I already have the Sigma 40mm.
