It's a Zoom - what did you expect
It's hard to describe how much I like the A7r - but one of the things that comes with it is that punishing 36MP sensor. I knew in my heart that a mid-level (but premium priced) zoom lens would not be perfect - but my hopes were high.
Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM sample images
Sony's FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM is a new standard zoom lens for its full-frame mirrorless cameras. The wide to short telephoto range and bright f2.8 focal ratio make it ideal for portraits and wedding photography, along with general-purpose use.
REVIEW: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens Review
The Sony G Master range is described as a "supreme blend of high resolution and beautiful bokeh" which will match current and even future trends with high resolution sensors. This is a very desirable combination of properties if it can be achieved, especially with such a useful, bright f/2.8...
From an optical quality point of view, there is not a lot to say against this 24-70mm GM lens. Sharpness is definitely its strongest point: the results are excellent all the way through, at all focal lengths and all main apertures from corner to corner.

Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens Review
When I purchased my first Sony MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera), the full frame a7R II , the first Sony lens I scheduled for review was this one, the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens. Sony gained renown for their cameras, especially their sensor technology, before their lenses.
(24mm, F2.8, 1/60, ISO 100) As a standard zoom lens, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM is certainly top notch. It doesn't have that charisma of the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 or the Sony 85mm F1.4 GM that you immediately see as soon as you take your first shot.
- If you're looking for a standard range zoom lens that delivers excellent performance across the board, look no further
- As part of Sony's illustrious, if pricey, G Master family, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 not only fills the gap in the collection, it's also secured a high spot in the best standard zoom...
- For all the excellent features it boasts, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 somehow feels a tad forgettable, especially next to some of its G Master brothers and particularly for a glass with $2200 price tag
- What we mean is that it doesn't have enough oomph or sex appeal.
Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM ( SEL2470GM ) - Review / Lab Test
Following the introduction of a trio of "prosumer"-grade f/4 zoom lenses, Sony is now pushing the FE mirrorless system with a set of professional-grade GM (G Master) lenses. Sony emphasizes that they paid special attention on maximum sharpness and bokeh quality ...
It's just OK
I love this focal range but not this lens. I'm shooting at ISO's of 500 and 800 and I'm still getting noisy images, way more noise than I feel one should get at these ISO's. At this price I'm disappointed with it overall as it is not nearly as sharp as my ancient Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 D lens which I...
Everything People Say It Is And More!
Sony has really set a new precedent with their GM glass and this really showcases it. They've somehow figured out how to encapsulate all of the desirable optical qualities you'd get with a very good prime into a zoom.
