First-Look Review of the Sony FDR-AX700 4K HDR Camcorder

No reviews
Verdict: The Sony FDR-AX700 really blurs the line between pro and consumer grade gear. It's quite amazing to see this degree of granular control and production-centric features in such a compact package.

Perfect balanced 4K semipro camcorder

5.0
Verdict: I use this camcorder to produce my recent steam railway films since upgrading to 4K, having previously used several semipro HD camcorders and low end 4k camcorder for the last 10 years, in reference to HD.
Pros: Durable, Great Features, Great Picture Quality, Lightweight, Simple Controls

Sony FDR-AX700

5.0
Verdict: A very good camera with close to all the camera's settings. No wonder, as it is also available as the HXR-NX80 and PXW-Z90. After many years with an FDR-AX100, I focus on what has changed.

Great capabilities and optics. Unfortunately, they are marred by gimmicky non-ergonomic buttons and parts that may wear out.

3.0
Verdict: I'm happy with the accessories that came with this bundle and with the features and quality of the Sony camcorder but... After previously owning 3 Sony camcorders and being happy with them, I am NOT happy with the gimmicks that plague this camera design.

Great video camera

5.0
Verdict: Had a chance to try it. Feels very solid, and above all very ergonomic, just like it's predecessor. Loved the quality in low light.

Waiting for firmware update.

3.0
Verdict: Clear image, good controls, friendly menus. Good low light performance, with usable ISO up to 5000. And the good things stop here unfortunately. Dynamic range on default setting is awful for a camera with a HDR badge, actually the dynamic range is better on the AX100.

Impressive performance

3.0
Verdict: The FDR-AX700 is a 4K HDR camcorder aimed at serious amateurs who already shoot videos and, I would suspect, people like me who use stills cameras. The manual functions are a nod towards professional video, but it can be set to automatic.

Excellent FDR-AX700 camcorder

5.0
Verdict: I've only had this FDR-AX700 camcorder a few days, so it's still a bit of a steep learning curve. But what I've taken so far (mostly in low light) has been stunning. I've found the best setting for me is 1080p at 50fps, which still produces very sharp video images, but with much smoother results.
