It's no secret that the Alpha 7 series of full-frame compact system cameras (CSC) has been a runaway success for Sony. By providing excellent image quality in a package that's smaller and more portable than any comparable full-frame DSLR, it has become one of the most popular of the new breed of...
I took my time before purchasing this lens, as although I wanted a fast aperture, prime standard lens I was initially put off by some negative reviews out there. There's not too many native options for full frame on Sony cameras without spending silly money.
This 50mm Full-frame E-mount Fast Prime Lens offers a focal length that is perfect for portraiture and a range of other subjects. A bright F1.8 maximum aperture, 7-blade circular aperture and aspherical element deliver impressive image quality with beautifully defocussed background bokeh, all in a...
The "Features" listed for this item indicated "Image Stabilization". This is not the OSS image stabilized version. Deceptive.
Takes great portrait shots, including in low light. High quality bokeh. Quick and accurate focusing. Image stabilization makes this higher quality than a F1.8 lens. You will be limited to portrait shots with this, unless you stay far away from the subject.
Paired with the Sony A7iii I think this is really worth it for an affordable prime. Nice and sharp with good autofocus speeds despite some reviews I read
"Excellent glass for a great price as it has built-in image stabilization. Extremely sharp, even with Precision Digital Zoom (PDZ) option selected at 3X on my NEX5N - in such mode, PDZ allows me to shoot at an equivalent focal length of 225mm. Excellent bokeh (f1.8)at the 225mm equivalent.
It is compact, maintaining the spirit of Sony's smaller MILC cameras. It is light and effortless to take with you. It is cheap, making loss or damage a relatively low risk (hint for kid use). And, it is capable of excellent image quality (though not at the widest apertures).
The Sony FE 50mm f1.8 is a very small, light and affordable "standard" prime lens which works with cropped and full-frame Sony mirrorless bodies – indeed it's one of the cheapest autofocus lenses available for the Sony system.
Good resolution and contrast; Minimal distortions (through lens profile); Very small and light; Very low price
Very visible focus-breathing; Strong coma; Some magenta haloing at high-contrast edges
