Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS Lens SEL50F18B review

If you turn a blind eye to the build quality, the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.8 might be a very attractive alternative for the more expensive Zeiss Sonnar T* 55 mm f/1.8 FE. The cheaper lens is weaker at the maximum relative aperture, that’s true, but on stopping down it provides even higher MTFs while...

Very good image quality in the frame centre,; Good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,; Low longitudinal chromatic aberration,; Imperceptible lateral chromatic aberration,; Lack of spherical aberration problems,; Negligible distortion,; Slight astigmatism,; Low vignetting on the APS-C...

Image quality near the maximum relative aperture on the edge of the frame could have been a bit better,; Huge coma,; Significant vignetting on full frame,; Slow autofocus.

Excellent lens

I read all the reviews before purchasing this lens. Originally I thought of buying the 35mm Sony OSS lens which was recommended as more useful for general all round photography. Whilst I agree for indoor photography and tight spaces this lens is probably too much it is however super for portraits.

Great Lens

When I purchased this lens I was still kinda debating if this lens is really worth it. Because I already have a 30mm f1.4 lens that I really used but when I tried using it, it surpasses my expectations the picture quality is really nice and sharp!

Light weight; captures sharp shots and good picture quality

Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS Review

Sony has paid more attention to its full-frame FE lenses in recent years than its APS-C E family, but there are still plenty of photographers using cameras in the Alpha 6000 line. The E 50mm F1.8 OSS ($299.99) covers a short telephoto field of view when paired with an A6000. It's a field of view that's a bit tight for everyday use—the E 35mm F1.8 OSS is a better choice if that's what you want—but it's a solid choice for portraiture. The lens is quite sharp, compact, and affordable, though it lacks the all-weather design you get with a pricier, full-frame FE lens like the Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA. Design The E 50mm ($348.00 at Amazon) is rather small, coming in at just 2.4 by 2.4 inches (HD), 7.1 ounces, and supporting 49mm front filters. Its barrel is aluminum, available in your choice of silver or black. A reversible lens hood is included. The lens projects an image circle large enough for use with an APS-C sensor camera, like the Alpha 6000, 6300, or 6500. Its field of v...

The Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS is a short telephoto lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It's a strong performer thanks to sharp optics and optical stabilization.

Wide aperture; Optical stabilization; Crisp optics; Minimal distortion; Compact; Affordable

Dim corners; Omits weather sealing; Electronic manual focus

Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS Lens SEL50F18B review

For the price, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens is a must have for anyone that owns an E-mount camera. While it focuses slow and produces some vignetting, it also creates nice bokeh and handles low-light well . Read more in our Full Conclusion .

Lightweight and compact so it's easy to carry in your bag or on an adventure; Maximum f/1.8 aperture is great for low-light shooting; Great Bokeh for defocused backgrounds; Very Affordable at $200

Slight Vignetting; No Optical Image Stabilization; Slow Autofocus

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8

It's no secret that the Alpha 7 series of full-frame compact system cameras (CSC) has been a runaway success for Sony. By providing excellent image quality in a package that's smaller and more portable than any comparable full-frame DSLR, it has become one of the most popular of the new breed of...

Great Lens

This is much better then the kit lens in sharpness and details. I would buy it again.

The f1.8 lets in a lot of light; That makes the lens very fast to focus in normal light; Great for portraits and flower shoots with tight depth of field; Very sharp lens; In manual focus on the a6000 it is unbelievable focus control on Zoom

It is prices; Fixed focal length

Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS Lens SEL50F18B review

The new lens features the traditional double-Gauss design with 6 elements in 5 groups. With a minimum focus distance of 1.48’ (0.45m), however, it also features an aspherical element, which is unusual at this level. As you might expect, there are some concessions compared with the high-end models.

REVIEW: Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Review

Most camera marques now have an inexpensive 50mm lens in their ranges. These are often described as "nifty fifties" or "plastic fantastics", the implication being that they are cheap and cheerful, but often superb performers as well.
