REVIEW: Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens Review

This 3x zoom lens is the one normally bundled as part of a kit with Sony NEX cameras. As a result, it's normally pretty cheap to pick up separately, costing only £140. For that you get a compact lens with optical stabilisation. In this review, we'll take a look at how it performs.

Poor Sharpness

I use this lenses with my NEX 5N camera and have been somewhat disappointed with it's performance. Most of the photos with this lens lack clarity and sharpness throughout the photo. I do a lot of landscape and cityscape so many of my photos are at infinity focal length.
Pros:
  • Small & light weight
Cons:
  • poor sharpness & barrel distortion

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM SAL-1855 review by infocus

This is an A-mount DT lens (DSLR APS-C format), quite different from the somewhat inferior E-mount variety with built-in IS. IS-lenses will probably, regardless of manufacturer, tend to have a negative effect on image quality!
Pros:
  • Quite decent performance
  • very inexpensive as a kit lens
Cons:
  • non really at this price point

Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS SEL1855

i experienced with silver and black Versions - the black ones are by far better - optical (but only with Nex 7) - maybe selected. it's not very small but I like it a lot more then my new 16-50 mm pancake.
Pros:
  • solid
  • good hood
  • sharp in black version
Cons:
  • large

This lens came as a bundle with the NEX7, the single body wasn't available at this time. I never found it much helpful and as soon as the Sony/Zeiss Sonar 24/1.8 was launched this zoom found a new home in a drawer. The price was low but it doesn't count if you're not satisfied with the quality.
Pros:
  • solid build
Cons:
  • Picture quality: poor sharpness and resolution
  • Slow open blend

this is a terrible lens

Sony should have never released this lens with the Nex 7. This is a cheapo lens that produces cheapo images and certainly isn't good enough for the sensor in either the Nex 7 or 6. I'm waiting for the new Zeiss 16-70
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Not sharp
  • Poor Design

Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (Sony NEX) - Review / Re-Test

The AF performance is pretty good for a contrast detection system (albeit highly dependent on the base camera). AF operations are basically noiseless. Manual focusing works "by wire" so the focus ring is not directly coupled to the focus gears but to the AF motor.

Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens

The Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens ($219.99 direct) is the standard zoom lens that is bundled with Sony D-SLR cameras . In that context it's not that bad of a lens-you're either paying nothing for it, or a $100 premium over a body-only price-but on its own there aren't any compelling reasons to...
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Internal focus motor
Cons:
  • Soft images
  • Distortion
  • Rotating front element.

It is unfair for me to compare this to lenses like 24-70/2.8 ZA but I cannot stop doing so. Good kit lens for the price and a better lens than newer 16-50
Pros:
  • Inexpensive
  • build quality
Cons:
  • small aperture

Sony isn't the first manufacturer to talk about making a large-sensor mirrorless camera for compact users but it is the first to actually follow the thinking through with a system designed from ground up for the 'point and shoot' crowd.
Pros:
  • Small
  • innovative designs that are still comfortable to hold
  • High resolution sensor with excellent High ISO performance (in PASM modes
  • Good JPEG output quality
  • Great build quality (particularly NEX-5
  • Metal barrelled lenses feel impressive compared to peers
  • Tiltable high-resolution screen,...
Cons:
  • High ISO capability (a major advantage of its large sensor) unavailable in iAuto mode
  • Constant overexposure of images wastes highlight capabilities (and no exposure compensation to correct it in iAuto mode
  • Consumes battery quickly if you use the screen a lot between shots
  • Poor shot-to-shot times...
