Very Poor Quality

This 16mm was the first lens I purchased together with my NEX-5 about 14 months ago and was always a disappointment, a great focal length that fails to deliver on sharpness. The optimum aperture for sharpness turns out to be 6.3 or 7.1 and is still not great, which is a shame because Sony has...

Just not sharp enough

I bought to use on a Sony a6500 along with a Sony E 35mm F/1.8 Oss lens. This lens is way too soft in the images and video. Compared to the 35mm, it's not even close. The 35mm is razor sharp for pictures & video with very quick focus. The 16mm will most likely be my first B&H return.

Quite compact and great price

Got this lens to use on a gimbal. It's smaller than the kit lens with a wider aperture.

this a great deal but image quality is average at best

Decent lens for the price. Together with the ultra-wide and fisheye converters, this a great deal but image quality is average at best. Videographers can get away with the quality although there's no hybrid AF (contrast+phase detection) support so AF is a little slow (at least it's smooth).

Sony E 16mm f/2.8 (SEL-16F28) - Review / Re-Test

The AF performance is pretty good for a contrast detection system (albeit highly dependent on the base camera). AF operations are basically noiseless. Manual focusing works "by wire" so the focus ring is not directly coupled to the focus gears but to the AF motor.

Avoid if you can.

I have had the lens for about 3 years. When I first got it, the lens was okay. Not perfect by any means but it was small and a bit faster than the kit lens at 16mm. Trouble is the lens started to die a few months after the warranty expired.

Sony E16mm f2.8 SEL 16F28

Sony's so-called mirrorless cameras, the NEX-3 and -5, are impressively compact especially considering they house an APS-C size sensor and flip-up rear LCD panels. But like any camera system, compatibility with a wide range of good-quality lenses is crucial.

Sony isn't the first manufacturer to talk about making a large-sensor mirrorless camera for compact users but it is the first to actually follow the thinking through with a system designed from ground up for the 'point and shoot' crowd.

Small; innovative designs that are still comfortable to hold; High resolution sensor with excellent High ISO performance (in PASM modes; Good JPEG output quality; Great build quality (particularly NEX-5; Metal barrelled lenses feel impressive compared to peers; Tiltable high-resolution screen,

High ISO capability (a major advantage of its large sensor) unavailable in iAuto mode; Constant overexposure of images wastes highlight capabilities (and no exposure compensation to correct it in iAuto mode; Consumes battery quickly if you use the screen a lot between shots; Poor shot-to-shot times
