Excellent Lens

Probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck lenses out there. Its an incredibly versatile prime lens that takes very sharp images with the nice bokeh that everyone is looking for these days. This lens should be the first lens you buy after advancing from the kit lens that came with your camera.

A good buy... BUT...

I bought this lens because I really wanted a portrait lens with a wide aperture, and I was very excited to get it. But upon buying it, I've noticed that pictures I've taken where my subject is in direct sunlight or is backlit, are subjected to EXTREME color fringing.

REVIEW: Sony NEX 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens Sample Photos

The new Sony NEX E Mount 50mm portrait lens gives anyone who has the standard NEX E Mount kit lens (18-55mm), or the NEX E Mount 16mm pancake, the ability to take portrait photos with a wide f/1.8 aperture, for more out of focus backgrounds, and better subject seperation.

Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM SAL-50F18 review by translucent mirror

The lens would effectively give you a 75mm focal length on a APS-C camera. It gives beautiful colors and sharpness and the bokeh is good too. At f/1.8 it is a relatively fast lens and pretty good for low light photography.

Cheap; light; nice bokeh

for this price; none

Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM

The Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM is a small and lightweight short portrait lens that won't break the bank. Sure, build quality isn't that great and it's a little hesitant and very noisy to focus, but overall this 50mm optic reliably delivers excellent results.

Lens Test: Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT SAM AF

Sony shooters committed to the APS-C-sized sensor have a new fast 50 to consider. Launched alongside Sony's latest entry-level DSLRs (including the Alpha 380 ), it gives everyday shooters the benefits of limited depth of field without breaking the bank.

Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT SAM SAL-50F18

The Sony 50mm f1.8 DT is a pretty good lens working effectively as a 75mm on APS-C cameras. If you have such a camera and have no ambition to move to full frame then it will serve you well.

Light; modern coatings; inexpensive; reasonably fast

Plastic construction; APS-C only
