Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM Lens Review

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at this budget 50mm lens for APS-C DSLRs sporting Sony's new smooth autofocus.

Lightweight; Quality when stopped down; Cheap

Basic design may be off-putting to some; Softness at maximum aperture; AF hunts occasionally

Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM

The Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM is a small and lightweight short portrait lens that won't break the bank. Sure, build quality isn't that great and it's a little hesitant and very noisy to focus, but overall this 50mm optic reliably delivers excellent results.

Great lens

This is the first lens I have bought since getting my alpha 55 a few months ago, and I love it. Great for portraits, making your subject really stand out against a lovely soft background and a fabulous price. What's not to like

Lightweight; Quick Focus; Sharp Focus

Great Lens

Fast delivery, exactly as described. First time with a fixed lens and very pleased with the photos I've taken with it so far.

Awesome for its price

This lens is a must. Takes a sharp clear portrait/macro and bokeh effect. For its price, you can never go wrong with it. I would definitely recommend this to Sony Alpha owners. I'm using this with my a58 and i have nothing but praises. Except 1 thing for video, the auto focus is a bit noisy.

"Get prime, get quality"

"There's always a question in the beginner's mind as to whether they should buy a prime lens or a zoom lens. The answer I've gotten from asking many people is both. And so I bought this lens. It is amazing.

Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM Lens

The DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM lens was introduced as one of four lenses announced with the A230, A330 and A380 DSLR cameras in early May 2009. The DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM lens is the first DT prime lens Sony has introduced and it's being promoted as a ‘portrait' lens.

Lens Test: Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT SAM AF

Sony shooters committed to the APS-C-sized sensor have a new fast 50 to consider. Launched alongside Sony's latest entry-level DSLRs (including the Alpha 380 ), it gives everyday shooters the benefits of limited depth of field without breaking the bank.

A good buy... BUT...

I bought this lens because I really wanted a portrait lens with a wide aperture, and I was very excited to get it. But upon buying it, I've noticed that pictures I've taken where my subject is in direct sunlight or is backlit, are subjected to EXTREME color fringing.

Great depth of field
