Budget build but good optics

Recently the price dropped a bit on this lens, so I picked one up with a gift voucher I had from Sony directly. I've used all the 3 "budget primes" from Sony in the past, on balance this is probably the most appealing of the 3 lenses (35/50/85mm) for APS-C users.

Very good lens - Very good price

55mm at 1.8 for $149! Not built from the best stuff on earth but a must have if you don't want to get the better built quality at $400. Great pictures and sharp.
Pros:
  • 1.8 aperture and price
Cons:
  • Long term built quality

Sony 50mm f/1.8 lens

One of the best lenses that I have ever owned. This lens is the least expensive 50mm offered by Sony. By using this lens you will be able to take great picture in low light condition, and if you are into portrait photography this lens is a must have if you are looking for a capable portrait lens...
Pros:
  • -Perfect price
  • - Good focal length
  • - low light capability
Cons:
  • - Build quality is a bit plastic
  • - Slow and noisy Auto focus

good lens at this price range

If you are on a tight budget, then this is a good lens for you. Low light photos are good. Nice bokeh. The only flip side is the delicate construction of the lens. Drop it once and be ready to but a new one, But considering it's price that's manageable.
Pros:
  • Consistent Output
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Lightweight
  • Nice Bokeh
Cons:
  • Weak Casing

Great lens for the price

I purchased this lens as it was good value for money and it was a good introduction to portrait photography, I have only had it for about a month and I am very pleased with the results.

Best deal in town...ever.

This lens is a steal. They sacrificed some build quality by reducing some metal, but MORE than made up for it with the optics. This lens is tack sharp. I did a bit of research over at DXO, and for my SonyA77II, only a Zeiss lens beat it for sharpness...by a hair... a hair.

Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT ( SAL-50F18 ) - Lab Test / Review

The Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT ( SAL-50F18 ) is pretty much a no-brainer for Sony APS-C DSLR users. The lens is very sharp even at f/1.8 and the resolution is about as good as it gets around f/5.6. Lateral CAs are absolutely negligible which adds to the outstanding sharpness perception.

Sony FE 50mm F1.8 Review

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is a budget full-frame 50mm lens for the Alpha mirrorless system. Optics are sound, but its autofocus motor is sluggish. The FE 50mm F1.8 ($249.99) is Sony's take on a low-cost prime lens for its full-frame mirrorless camera system. It captures a standard-angle field of view and offers a wide f/1.8 maximum aperture so you can blur backgrounds behind your subject and capture photos in subpar light. But it's on the pricey side for what it is, and is held back by some optical shortcomings when shot wide open. More annoyingly, its autofocus motor takes a long time to lock onto a target. There aren't a lot of alternatives available at this price point, however, so photographers on a tight budget may still find it to be a good choice. But our recommendation is to save your pennies and get the Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA ($998.00 at Amazon) instead. Design The FE 50mm is small and light. It measures 2.3 by 2.7 inches (HD) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The front element supports 49mm filters. Its barrel is sturdy polycarbonate and its lens mount is metal—it doesn't feel like a cheap lens. But neither doe...
Pros:
  • Crisp from edge to edge when stopped down
  • Light and compact
  • Minimal distortion
  • Solid construction with included lens hood
Cons:
  • Slow focus
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration
  • Edge softness and dimmed corners at wide apertures
  • Omits optical stabilization

Awesome for its price

This lens is a must. Takes a sharp clear portrait/macro and bokeh effect. For its price, you can never go wrong with it. I would definitely recommend this to Sony Alpha owners. I'm using this with my a58 and i have nothing but praises. Except 1 thing for video, the auto focus is a bit noisy.
