Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 Camera - Mark 6 DSCRX100M6 review

While it’s probably the best travel compact on the market, you have to really want a compact camera to spend almost £1200/$1200 on it. The RX100 VI has a heck of a lot going for it, but it’s probably quite hard to justify the cost.

Sony RX100 VI review

There are so many great things about the Sony RX100 VI, but before you go into a dizzying spell of lust where it seems like nothing will become between you and the thing you so much desire, let’s talk about its flaws. The lack of mic port is an oversight, especially considering all the great video features. And with the aperture now starting at f/2.8 as opposed to f/1.8, it’s not going to perform wonderfully in low light. What’s more, it’s not even slightly weather-proof. However, not only does it hit the right design notes, it shoots a staggering 24 fps at full resolution and has an AF faster than you can blink. The tilting screen makes it mega handy for taking subtle close-up street scenes, and it’ll be just as good at sweeping landscapes, making it truly an all-rounder. And one last but crucial point is that honking great big zoom, which is truly a modern marvel for something so teeny. It’s the camera that you can find space for, not matter how much stuff you’re carrying. It’ll do so much of the grunt work with its demonly fast autofocusing, so you can enjoy your holiday and just take great photos. Photos that will look head, shoulders, knees and toes better than anything you’ll shoot from your smartphone.

Stunning image quality ; Lovely build ; Excellent AF ;

Battery drains quite quickly ; It's so expensive;

Sony RX100 VI adds 8x zoom, HLG HDR to its 1-inch compact line

Sony's long had a long-zoom camera for the SLR-style enthusiast, the RX10 IV, but its advanced compact line has had a less-than-3x zoom lens since the RX100 II appeared in 2014. With the RX100 VI, Sony ups that lens to an 8x, 24-200mm-equivalent with a reasonably fast aperture range of f2.8-4.5, making it more flexible travel and everyday camera. It also adds a Hybrid Log Gamma Picture Profile to enable HDR-compatible 4K UHD capture.

The update to the RX100 series adds a Hybrid log gamma profile for HDR capture and extends the lens from 24-70mm to 24-200mm for more general-purpose flexibility.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC RX100 VI review

The RX100 VI is a very capable camera, combining a flexible zoom range with impressive autofocus. However, the small maximum aperture required to keep the size down limits the image quality in some situations. The relatively high price means you have to really want its unequaled combination of capability and size.

Anyone needing fast AF, good video, sharp images and a flexible zoom range in a pocket-sized package.;

Anyone seeking the best possible image quality in dim light or with moving subjects.;

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VI Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VI ($1,199.99) is essentially the RX10, but smaller. It covers the same zoom range as Sony's first 1-inch bridge camera, and while its lens isn't as bright when zoomed in, it fits into your pocket. It doesn't come cheap, however: At $1,200, it's the most expensive pocket camera we've seen that doesn't boast a Hasselblad or Leica badge. Its image quality and build are top notch, helping to justify the price tag and earn our Editors' Choice recommendation. If you like the idea of the camera, but struggle to justify its cost, the $800 Panasonic ZS200 is a good, more affordable alternative—but aside from its longer zoom range, it's not quite the equal of the RX100 VI. Design: Big Zoom, Small Body The original version of the RX100 was a groundbreaking camera at the time of its 2012 release. Its 1-inch image sensor ran circles around competing point-and-shoot cameras—the sensor format is about four times as large as image sensors found in typical point-and-...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VI delivers premium image quality, fit and finish, and features in a pocketable form factor, but demands a hefty price.

8x zoom lens; Large 1-inch image sensor; 20MP resolution; Up to 24fps Raw image capture; Tilting LCD; Large pop-up EVF; 4K video with HDR support; Ultra slow-motion at 1080p

Expensive; Can't start video while images are writing to card; Limited touch functions; Dense menu system

Sony RX100 VI Review

Impressive lens gives sharp images all through its really useful zoom range; Very good image quality with reliable exposure; Remarkably fast autofocus and continuous shooting means you should never miss a shot; Pop-up viewfinder and tilting screen give flexible composing options;

Small, slippery body is far too easy to drop without an accessory grip; Far too expensive compared to its competitors; Tiny buttons can make operation frustrating; Comparatively poor battery life;

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI review: A little camera with huge talent

If you're looking for an ultra-compact camera that can deliver great-looking photos and video in almost any situation, and you're willing to pay a big premium for that, this is the model you should consider first.

Tiny size considering its 1in sensor; Superb photo and video quality; Fast and accurate autofocus; Useful pop-up viewfinder; Sturdy metal body;

It’s very expensive; Small buttons might irritate some; New zoom limits maximum aperture at longer focal lengths;
