Sony Alpha A6400
Sony's Alpha a6400 is not a full-frame camera but it has plenty of features you'd associate with one. This makes this APS-C-format mirrorless camera a great choice if you’re serious about photography, but shopping within a set budget.
Full-frame autofocus
The autofocus system has the same technology as Sony's full-frame models, such as the renowned a9. 425 phase-detection AF points, and 425 contrast-detection AF points, cover around 84% of the image area. This combines with a BIONZ X image processing engine that lets you attain focus in just 0.02 seconds.
Indelible images
The BIONZ X processor plus a 24.2MP APS-C image sensor equals enhanced image quality and colour reproduction. Yet again, the Alpha a6400 has full-frame capability in this department, with image processing algorithms suppressing noise and preserving image resolution.
4K Movie Recording
The Alpha a6400 is fantastic for movie-making. The 4K UHD recording process results in high-quality 4K video footage with sharp detail and excellent depth. Vloggers like the camera for this very reason.
Shoot it your way
Shoot with greater freedom, thanks to features like the 180° 3.0" LCD tiltable flip screen with 921,600 dots of resolution; this allows for effective framing of selfie-style shooting for still and video capture.
A look at the lens
The lens is one of the most important features in any camera, and it's a standout in this model. The E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens spans the wide-angle to medium telephoto range, and is partnered with a 27-202.5mm equivalent zoom and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization feature, which vastly reduces camera shake during handheld shooting.
A newer model Sony Alpha A6500 was released in October 2016.

Sony a6400 Review
After lavishing so much attention on full-frame mirrorless cameras for the past two years, Sony has finally found the time to look again to the smaller APS-C format . The recently introduced A6400 ($900, body only) receives many features trickling down from Sony's full-frame line, despite being less...- Great new autofocus system
- Solid image quality across the board
- Expanded ISO range up to 102,600
- 180-degree flip screen
- Very good value for the price
- No in-body image stabilization
- AF performance depends on lens used
- Some frustrating user interface elements
Sony A6400 review
The Sony A6400 is a solid mid-range mirrorless camera with an APSC sensor delivering good quality 24 Megapixel photos and 4k video. Improvements to the autofocus system mean it'll track and stay focused on subjects more successfully than any camera at its price point whether you're shooting stills...
Sony Alpha A6400 review
However, with Sony equipping the Alpha A6400 with some of its latest tech, most notably the advanced AF system, this camera could actually prove a more tempting proposition than the top of the range A6500, a camera that's now more than two years old.- Highly advanced autofocus
- Decent burst shooting speed
- Bright viewfinder
- Good video features
- Good value for the spec
- No built-in image stabilization
- No headphone jack
- 16:9 aspect ratio screen
Sony A6400 review
For bloggers, vloggers and independent content creators, the Sony A6400 is a dream. Its still image quality is very good, its 4K video is even better, and its 180-degree screen and eye-detect AF are perfect for single-handed video capture.- 180-degree screen for vlogging
- Terrific if complex AF
- Very good image quality
- Limited external controls
- Interminable menu system
- Dated rear screen and EVF
The premium APS-C and full-frame mirrorless camera worlds are colliding. Canon just recently launched its budget EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera for about a Rs. 1,10,000, which puts it in roughly the same segment as other notable cropped sensor mirrorless cameras such as the Sony A6500 and the...
- Reliable eye and tracking AF
- Compact
- Very good image and video quality
- Respectable ISO performance
- 180-degree tilting display
- Good battery life
- Noticeable rolling shutter at 4K
- Hot shoe accessories can block LCD
Sony A6400 review: A star of track and field
Faster, brighter and a little vainer, the A6400 is a great little camera for the creative photographer and videographer. It builds on the success of its predecessors with a very accomplished focus tracking system, fast focus and more adaptable tilting rear screen.- Subject tracking AF system
- 180 degree tilting LCD screen for front of camera viewing
- Button and dial customisation
- Great low light performance
- Highly accomplished metering
- Pro video outputs and control
- Lacks built-in stabilisation of A6500
- Top rather than side tilting screen
- Screen blacks out at top burst setting
- Menu system still seems cluttered
- Slow start-up with power zoom
- Rolling shutter issue at 4K
What We Love. The Sony a6400 performed so much better than we had expected, making shooting with it a pretty cool experience. Externally, it looks more like an entry-level model crafted for inexperienced shooters and fledgling vloggers.
- Excellent image quality
- Accurate and very responsive AF
- Great EyeAF
- Wide ISO range
- Nice noise handling
- Burst mode of 11fps
- Slightly improved battery life than predecessor
- LCD tilts 180-degrees upwards
- 4K recording at full pixel readout
- Slow-motion recording available
- Log profiles...
- No IBIS
- Rolling shutter
- EyeAF's low-light performance needs improvement
- SD card slot doesn't support UHS-II
Sony stuffed in loads of features that give the a6400 a good value and the quality of its image makes it a good camera. Selfie mode with the monitor is a nice touch, but having it always obstructed by the EVF and any hot/cold shoe accessory is a bummer.
