Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

For a great many Sony full-frame users, the little Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE looks like an obvious addition to the kit bag – but APS-C camera users may want to look elsewhere.

Small and easy to carry, Impressive optics, Generally quick autofocus, Supplied with neat lens case, Less than half the price of Sony equivalent

Slightly plasticky build, Inconvenient hood design

Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

During our test we were comparing the Samyang to its noticeably more expensive and more solidly built rival, the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35 mm f/2.8 ZA. In most of categories the Samyang prevailed and I think it’s enough to recommend that lens to any potential buyer.

Very good image quality in the frame centre,, Good image quality on the edge of APS-C/DX,, Sensible image quality on the edge of full frame,, Low longitudinal chromatic aberration, Very low lateral chromatic aberration,, Lack of problems with spherical aberration,, Moderate astigmatism,, Sensible...

Not especially sturdy barrel,, Noticeable coma,, Huge vignetting.

Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

The new Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE is a very affordable, high-quality wide-angle lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. In terms of image quality, sharpness is good when shooting wide-open at f/2.8, becoming even better from f/4 onwards, but the edges aren't quite as sharp as the centre, with...

Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

Samyang has an enviable range of manual focus lenses at reasonable prices and has been expanding this into the world of autofocus. Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE Sony E - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue
