Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Sweet Déjà Vu

Five generations in, Samsung seems pretty much settled (pun intended) with its flagship foldable phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 looks a lot like its two predecessors on the outside and, except for the processor and (still) impressive hinge, a facsimile of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 specifications.
Pros:
  • Good build quality, Great battery life, High-quality camera performance, Consistent performance, Best Android update policy
Cons:
  • Under-display selfie camera is still noticeable, Design feels stuck in time, 25 W charging is not fast, Still missing a stylus garage, Gets hot under demanding tasks, Still expensive

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review

Samsung wants $1,800 for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and it's so good we almost don't mind paying that much....
Pros:
  • New hinge finally folds flat, Bright, vibrant displays, Powerful multitasking features, Impressive peak performance, S Pen support, Long-term update policy
Cons:
  • $1,800 price tag is still too high, Mediocre battery life, Thick and heavy, Slows down under sustained load, S Pen not included, no dock

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 can best be described as an iterative upgrade. Sure, it fixes long-time issues with the Fold series by getting rid of the gap and impressive software support, but it’s near-identical in most other areas, making the £100/$150 price hike a particularly hard pill to swallow.
Pros:
  • Large 7.6-inch foldable display, Most powerful foldable phone around, Better app support than other book-style foldables, You want to use the foldable display to its fullest: Samsung’s exceptional push to get developers to integrate support for the boxy inner display shines through, with plenty of...
Cons:
  • Very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, £100/$150 price increase, Identical camera setup, You want the best photography experience: Boasting the same camera tech as the Z Fold 4, the foldable delivers fine (but not particularly exceptional) images, especially compared to the Google Pixel Fold .

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Review: The Best Foldable gets Thinner

With the Galaxy Z Fold 5 this year, Samsung put the phone on a diet, sort of. It's now thinner and lighter, thanks to a new hinge design. Which also allows it to fold fully flat.
Pros:
  • Huge hinge upgrade, One of the best performing foldables on the market, Speakers sound incredible with Dolby Atmos included, Battery life is pretty good for a foldable, Thinner and lighter, more pocketable, One UI works the best on foldables
Cons:
  • 25W charging on a $1,799 is shameful, Outer display is still very narrow and hard to use at times, The crease is still very noticeable, S Pen is a separate purchase ($100 case)

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review: The foldable leader holds steady

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a worthy successor to the Z Fold 4, bringing a flatter and lighter profile to an otherwise-familiar foldable formula. It's got ample power, versatility, and high-quality components and materials.
Pros:
  • It folds flat, Lighter and thinner, A better mobile chipset means even snappier performance
Cons:
  • The cover screen now feels too narrow, The cameras are good but unchanged from the last model, It's expensive and should include the S Pen in the price

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Review: Not Getting Any Cheaper

Much like the foldable monster that came before it, this device is the most over-the-top smartphone experience on the market today. It costs a pretty penny, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is far enough ahead of the competition that you won't likely regret spending the cash.
Pros:
  • The best foldable display yet, Top-tier back-facing camera array, Finally folds flat, Entire experience has moved beyond Early Adopter status, Samsung's software makes transforming Android feel natural, Beautiful hardware all-around
Cons:
  • Still exceptionally expensive, Should come with a protective case by default, Charging speeds are still just OK

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review

In February 2020 , Samsung planted its flag in the sand. Screen issues aside, the original Galaxy Fold was met with a mixed response. “Innovation for innovation’s sake” was a common refrain. The wildly expensive device arrived at just a hair under $2,000.
