A bright little projector in an otherwise ordinary Android phone
Samsung has had this projector phone on the back burner for a while. But finally it's out in the market (at least where I live). Let's get straight to the projector. It works. It's impressive for something that's on a phone. And if you step back, it give you an image that's 50 inches.

Samsung Galaxy Beam review
The Samsung Galaxy Beam is certainly different from everything else around it: none of the other handsets in our Best Smartphones list have their own projector. Look at the front and it's a decently styled Android phone with a bright, colourful screen and fetching yellow coloured edge band.

Samsung's Galaxy Beam has a cool, built-in projector
Never mind that the Samsung Galaxy Beam shoots 720p HD video or has a bright yellowjacket design. The one reason you're reading this is because of the quirky smartphone's capability to literally project the contents of your phone onto the nearest available surface. Your curiosity is justified.
Pros:
- The Samsung Galaxy Beam comes with an integrated pico projector
- a dual-core processor
- 720p video capture
- and a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen
Cons:
- The Galaxy Beam's projection software needs some work
- the 5-megapixel camera sometimes blurs indoor shots
- and the build is thicker and heavier than many of today's phones

Samsung Galaxy Beam Android projector phone review
Samsung's first Galaxy Beam, the GT-i8520, was a tremendously thick, heavy and expensive handset that very few bought. Having had a rethink, the company is now trying the whole smartphone-with-a-projector idea again with the GT-i8530.

Samsung Galaxy Beam Review
Android smartphone manufacturers today try to add features that will distinguish their devices from the rest of the run-of-the-mill Android phones. Some go in for a slim form factor, some focus on design, and others give you free cloud storage. Some even boast of glasses-free 3D capabilities.
Pros:
- Good performer
- Good build
- Projector works well
- has nice extra features
Cons:
- Native video format support not wide enough
- Not so great display in sunlight
- Unattractive colour scheme

Samsung Galaxy Beam i8530
Samsung may be locked in various legal battles around the world about whether or not it copied design elements from Apple's products, but there's no doubting that Samsung has produced some innovative products this year, including the Note 2 and the Galaxy Beam that we're looking at here.
Pros:
- Projector works really well in darker rooms
- Supplied with two batteries
- Reasonably attractive design
Cons:
- Very expensive given the spec
- Screen and camera could be better
- Runs an older version of Android

Samsung Galaxy Beam review
Smartphones often like to focus on a single "killer feature". Some claim to have screens as good as cinemas, others are the perfect iPod music player alternative. The Samsung Galaxy Beam, however, is really a movie projector. It's on sale now for around £390.
Pros:
- Built-in projector
- spare battery supplied
Cons:
- Projector's not great quality
- old version of Android
- pricey for a midrange handset
