The Samsung 850 EVO is the latest in its affordable line of performance SSDs and shows Samsung's desire to push the solid state game along, even at the lower end of the price/performance stack.
Samsung is at the ready with a brand new family of mainstream solid state drives, targeting the market segment previously occupied by its popular SSD 840 EVO series. The new Samsung SSD 850 EVO series is the follow-up to the company's current flagship SSD 850 PRO , but the new EVO is Samsung's first...
The Samsung 850 EVO 500GB is an extremely impressive SSD that provides class-leading technology and speeds to the market. Through our benchmark results, we found the drive to perform consistently well and above all its competitors.
I spent days (DAYS!) trying to get their software to create an image of my existing Win7 disk that were bootable. I failed and installed a clean OS. Still no boot. Finally moved it to the SATA2 ports on the MoBo. Booted! Moved it back to the SATA3 ports, no boot.
The first SSD I used day to day in my main PC was the Intel X25-M and despite being an eye-watering $4.87 per gigabyte, the 80GB model was a bargain at $390 considering the SLC X25-E was selling for almost twice that in a miniscule 64GB capacity.
Highest capacity consumer SSD available; performance is consistent with and often a tad faster than the 500GB 850 Evo; pricing is fair
Fair doesn't mean inexpensive and if you're on a budget; two of Samsung's 1TB SSDs are a tad cheaper than one of the 2TB models

Consistent; fast read and write speeds; Cheaper than 850 Pro; Decent warranty
850 Pro drive is faster still; Lesser endurance rating; No extras included
It's been only a few short months since Samsung's 850 Pro delivered the company's long-lasting 32-bit 3D NAND to the high-end/corporate market.
3D NAND promise drive longevity; Good performance for the price
