Replacing the Panasonic G6, the G7 sits beneath the Panasonic GH4 in the company's line-up of compact system cameras. It's the smaller of the two SLR-like models, and is aimed at enthusiast photographers. It sits alongside the rectangular Panasonic GX7, and above the GF7, GM1 and GM5.
Pros:
  • OLED viewfinder
  • Vari-angle touch-screen
  • Integration of 4K Photo shooting
Cons:
  • Two-year-old sensor
  • Lightweight build
  • Micro Four Thirds type sensor is smaller than APS-C

Panasonic Lumix G7

I liked the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 a lot more than I expected. The G7 brings the company's midrange line of enthusiast and family-oriented interchangeable-lens models up to date with features like 4K/UHD (ultra high definition) video and the company's most recent autofocus and image-processing...
Pros:
  • For the money
  • the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 delivers great photo and video
  • excellent performance and a broad feature set
Cons:
  • It's another in a long line of Panasonic cameras with proprietary USB connectors and some people might find it too complicated

Panasonic G7 review

The G7 has two superb cameras to compete with. The Canon EOS 750D is a true SLR that doesn't put a foot wrong and beats the G7 for image quality. The G7 is faster in continuous mode, though, its viewfinder is larger and it has more plentiful physical controls.

There's no doubt Panasonic's gunning for D-SLR converts here, but the G7 is equally enjoyable to use via its touch screen controls and ‘Quick Menu'. There are also big ticks for the ‘DFD' autofocusing, OLED viewfinder and, again, Panasonic's ability to squeeze a big performance out of its 16 MP...

Panasonic Lumix G7 review: GH4 junior shows off 4K smarts

The camera market has self-saturated. There's so much good kit out there, capable of producing such high quality images, that product updates tend to focus on new features rather than significant core changes to sell themselves.
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • fully featured screen and viewfinder
  • impressive 4K capture
  • decent image quality (4K Photo has its uses too)
  • pinpoint autofocus mode
  • extensive and customisable controls
  • silent electronic shutter option
Cons:
  • Boxy and plasticky build
  • larger than G6 predecessor
  • occasional autofocus slip-ups
  • single SD card (slot in battery compartment)
  • no 4K Cinema mode
  • 4K Photo pre-burst focus issues
  • battery life could be better
