The new Olympus XZ-10 announced today joins the XZ-2 in Olympus's range of premium compact cameras, but is 40% smaller than its sibling and offers the same f/1.8 lens. The Olympus XZ-10 also shares the same True Pic VI image processor found in the Olympus OM-D.

Compact price, mid-sized features

Compact cameras are in trouble. Smartphones continue to don sexier optics, allowing the photographer in all of us to carry one less item and still get decent shots of our lunches/cats/moderately funny occurrences.

Olympus Stylus XZ-10 – a serious compact P&S with an impressive array of features

Despite their financial troubles, Olympus still continues to release some very high quality cameras, which is a good thing, since we really don't want them to end up like Kodak (to be fair, they're most likely to be bought by some other conglomerate).

Review: Olympus Stylus XZ-10

Overall, a study build and decent image quality makes this a decent camera to own, but it has its downs as well. While it offers PASM modes, with control on aperture, exposure bias, and shutter speeds; the 1/2.3" sensor does have its limitations.
Pros:
  • Sturdy to hold
  • PASM modes
  • Offers F/1.8 aperture settings
  • Loads of image effects to play with
Cons:
  • Small sensor
  • Tacky UI
  • Over saturated colours
  • Expensive

Olympus XZ-10 review: Olympus XZ-10

With great features like a fast f/1.8 lens and slow-motion video, the XZ-10 will win the hearts of photographers who want a pocketable camera. There are some image quality issues though, and battery life is short. When it comes to high-end compact cameras, Olympus has a pretty good pedigree. Models like the XZ-1 and XZ-2 featured bright lenses and plenty of manual controls. Now the XZ-10 steps in, priced (and sized) less than the premium camera, but with a whole range of features.
Pros:
  • Wireless flash control
  • Impressively low shutter lag times and fast AF
  • Art filters and photo montage for fun effects
  • Fast f/1.8 lens with rotating ring to change options.
Cons:
  • Lens exhibits plenty of chromatic aberration
  • Short battery life.
