Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R Review

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R is a solid budget option for Micro Four Thirds shooters looking for an affordable telephoto zoom lens. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R ($199.99 direct)($199.00 at Amazon) is one of the less expensive lenses you can attach to your Micro Four Thirds camera. It's designed to complement the entry-level M.Zuiko 14-42mm zoom that ships with Olympus PEN bodies like the E-PL5($199.00 at Amazon). It gives you the telephoto reach that the standard kit zoom can't manage, covering an 80-300mm field of view in terms of traditional 35mm photography. It doesn't have an ambitious aperture, and it's not as sharp from edge to edge as more expensive lenses, but it performs well in good light, bringing distant objects into clear view. The lens is light and compact when you consider its focal range. It measures 3.3 by 2.5 inches (HD), weighs just 6.7 ounces, and supports 58mm filters. The front element doesn't rotate when zooming or focusing, so using a polarizing filter is not an issue, but the lens does double in height when zoomed to the 150mm position. The barrel is plastic, wit...
Pros:
  • Inexpensive
  • Good telephoto zoom range
  • Sharp through most of its zoom range
Cons:
  • Plastic lens mount
  • Performance suffers at the edges of the frame
  • Not optically stabilized
  • Modest aperture

I've had this for several years. I also have a range of other Olympus lenses for the EM1 and EM10 M2, including the 12- 40 Pro, and a couple of primes . My favorite is the 14-42 EZ pancake. It's convenient, and very sharp. This 40-150 is a totally different story. It's not close to being sharp.

Plastic, Fantastic.

I have some of the best Olympus expensive Pro Lenses, like 40-150mm f/2.8, the big brother of this lens, also 4 other ones and this lens stands up against my pro lenses, every bit as sharp at f/5.6-8. Obviously not as fast at f/4-5.6 but most of the time it is enough for me.

Good lens, no problems. Some people complain about it extending when zooming in, but I don't see why that would be a problem. Yes, it extends to double its size - but only when in use and zooming. It's not like it causes any problem in storage.

Lightweight telephoto Zoom

The image quality of this lens is quite good and very sharp. It focuses easily, and produces good color. It's lightweight, making it very easy to carry around. I've used it to make some beautiful portraits. As a $99 add-on, it was an incredible value.

Awesome Lens for the price!

"Ever since I moved to Micro Four Thirds, I was missing my Sony 55-200mm, but never really looked into similar alternatives - was too focused on primes. This Fall, I'm in a new city, and felt the need for a flexible telephoto lens - luckily for me, I found the Oly 40-150mm at an awesome sale!
