Olympus M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 Review

The 10.7x Olympus M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 for Micro Four Thirds cameras delivers impressive image quality for a superzoom lens. The Olympus M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 ($599.99 direct)($629.99 at Amazon Canada) is an all-in-one zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Its 10.7x zoom range covers an impressive 28-300mm (35mm equivalent) field of view, and its aperture only narrows by one f-stop as you zoom. Many lenses of this type are plagued by distortion and sharpness issues, but this one manages to keep distortion to a reasonable level, and aside from some issues with the edges at longer focal lengths, is impressively sharp. It's not a lens for low-light shooting, but if you're looking for a walkaround lens to use in good light, it's a solid option. The lens measures 3.3 by 2.5 inches, weighs 9.9 ounces, and features a 58mm filter thread. It telescopes as you zoom, doubling in length by the time you get to 150mm, but the front element doesn't rotate so using a polarizing filter is possible. Aside from the wide zoom ring and narrower manual focus ring, there are no physical controls on the barrel. Ther...
Pros:
  • Reasonable price tag
  • 10.7x zoom range
  • Compact design
  • Minimal distortion
Cons:
  • Modest aperture
  • Soft edges at longer focal lengths
  • No image stabilization

Poor image quality, OK for snapshots

Had the original model and sold it due to poor image quality. So tried the II, no visible improvement. One might say that I'm expecting too much from an 11:1 ratio zoom but the full four-thirds Pan-Leica 14-150 was almost pro quality.

Stunning weather-sealed superzoom for a (relatively) low price

Bought this as a weather-sealed travel zoom to go with my OM-D EM-5 II, and expected some compromises because of the wide zoom range. It has exceeded my expectations, a stunning lens for the money. It's a lot of lens for the money, and competently replaces the 14-42 and 40-150 m.Zuiko kit lenses.

So, so much better

Two months ago, I turned in my heavy Nikon gear, faithful friends for years, and swapped for an Oly e-m5 II. This was the lens I chose for its range and weatherproofing. I love it! I have taken over 500 photos since then and couldn't be happier.

I bought this for the times I want to travel light (situations where I want to have versatility between near and far focus). I pair it with my M10-II. The combination has worked well for me. I have used it primarily during the daylight hours.

Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II is a modest but worthy upgrade to the 5-year-old M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 lens. The biggest improvement is the addition of dust and moisture seals, which means the lens can be used safely in wet and dusty environments alike, as long it is...
