I just bought this lens so cheap. Very light and sharp. Nice for walking around. The pictures are amazing for the price. Not 2.8 but VR really helps.
Pros:
  • light
  • sharp
Cons:
  • build quality but not a big problem

This Nikon lens features 15 elements in 11 groups, including one ED element. The main difference from the non-VR lens lies in the way the VR works, requiring a compensatory lens group to be shifted by the VR motors.
Pros:
  • Vibration Reduction
  • handling
Cons:
  • Price
  • optically not as good as non-VR version

The main reason for the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX is the addition of the VR technology, and the first thing that strikes you about this lens is the light weight. At a meagre 355g, its really some achievement to get all it offers into such a small lens.

Good buy for your money

The lens VR is a plus, it helps eliminate the shake/movements you make while shooting the subject. It has sharp output. I bought this lens because I needed it for scenery as my husband and I travel a lot (local & international).
Pros:
  • Consistent Output
  • Easily Interchangeable
  • Lightweight
  • Rugged
Cons:
  • Weak Casing

Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f4-5.6 G IF-ED

You don't always need a top-flight telephoto lens. It all depends on what kind of photographer you are and the subjects you prefer. You may find that the vast majority of the shots you take are with the standard ‘kit' zoom and that you only rarely need anything longer.

Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor

A solid performer that punches above its price point...I own the Tamron 70-300 VC, which has better IQ and markedly better image stabilization, but at the price of heft. When I want a "light kit" and portability is paramount, this lens shines.
Pros:
  • light
  • inexpensive
  • excellent IQ given its variable aperture
Cons:
  • cheaper build
  • VR a tad less effective than stated
