Bought it for my trip to Yellowstone. My camera is an old Nikon D40 with kit lens. New Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm was a great help to shoot outdoors, especially animals. Pictures were sharp and clear. The lens was not a burden, though I hiked a lot.

I just bought this lens so cheap. Very light and sharp. Nice for walking around. The pictures are amazing for the price. Not 2.8 but VR really helps.
light; sharp
build quality but not a big problem
This lens is a bargain! It lets you take great pictures and it's nice and light -- that's the plus side of it's mostly plastic construction. The downside is that you need to be careful with it. Treat it well and it will last for years though.
This lens does not offer as long of a zoom range as the 18-200mm lens, but is much less expensive and produces sharp images. It also includes vibration reduction (image stabilization) technology for reducing camera "shake". This lens is compact and lightweight, making it a great choice for travel.
I bought this lens just hours before my daughter's first dance recital. I didn't know that they were going to totally refuse any flash film, but luckily I didn't need it. I was able to take awesome clear pics in nearly a zero-light setting, except for the stage.
Consistent Output; Durable; Fast / accurate auto-focus
Tough To Attach
This lens is sharp even at wide apertures, the Vibration Reduction (image stabilization) works great, autofocus speed is more than acceptable, and it is very light and compact. No other company offers a lens with these features at this price.

I got this lens as part of a package along with a 18-105mm lens. I'm finding that I tend to use the 18-105 a lot more. The 55-200 gives a bit more zoom but to keep it light it is quite a bit smaller. Still seems like a good lens and the package made it a great deal.
Easily Interchangeable; Fast / accurate auto-focus
Limited range; No Macro
Wouldn't it be great to get some serious telephoto zoom reach without filling up most of your gadget bag with a big clunky lens? The Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED fits the bill with a remarkably compact design, and it's less than half the weight of its big brother, the Nikon...
Jan 23rd. Most digital SLR cameras are sold in a kit form with a standard 18-55mm type of zoom lens. While suitable for more common photo situations, such as group shots of people or wide-angle landscapes, a standard kit lens is not as practical for capturing distant subjects.
