Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens

This professional quality, mid-range zoom lens has been designed specifically for the 'APS-C' sized sensors used in all of Nikon's DSLR cameras and is quite a different beast from the 18-55mm lens supplied with the D50 camera reviewed in this issue.

Nikon's 17-55mm DX lens is designed for Nikon DX (APS-C) sized sensors. With a fast continuous aperture of f/2.8, the lens is among the biggest, heaviest and the most expensive in this category. So what's in there to warrant such bulk and cost

Cons:
  • Slower Sonic Wave Motor than comparable Canon lens

Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED DX - Review / Test Report

REVIEW: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor Lens Review

Handling and features This professional grade optic for Nikon DX format digital SLRs provides an angle of view equivalent to a 25.5-82.5mm lens on a 35mm camera. This lens also sports a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the range, a silent wave focusing motor and costs around £1065.

Stunningly Sharp

If image quality trumps equipment cost every time, either because you're a pro or because you're an aficionado with lots of cash, this is the zoom superwide to normal for you. Paired with a 70-200, the 55-70mm range is seldom missed and you have exceptional and fast glass for about every situation...
Pros:
  • This lens is probably the pinnacle of superwide to "normal" zooms (which most DX shooter tend to find the most versatile range) ever made for the Nikon F-mount
  • Nice and fast fixed 2.8 aperture, and the crispness of the images it yields is stunning.
Cons:
  • Extremely expensive
  • Very heavy and very large, especially with the lens hood attached-- literally twice the size of the Nikkor 18-70 and the Sigma 18-50
  • The lens hood just clips the corner of the frame at 17mm, which I'm at a loss to understand how Nikon let slip by one of their marquee DX lenses.
