Nikon 24-120mm f4G VR review

The Nikon 24-120/4.0G VR delivers good overall performance, but unfortunately the FX-corners look like the lens has been designed with only a 12MP FX-sensor in mind: On a 36MP full-frame sensor you need to stop down to f8 to lift FX-corner performance to good levels.

Good to very good quality in the DX image-circle; Image stabilization; Weather sealing; Quiet AF operation

Needs stopping down to f8 for good FX-corners; Flare and ghosting not well controlled; A bit pricey for the performance

My reason for buying thisb lens

Because D800/D800E has been released, (actually I bought D800E), I needn to change from my 28-70 f2.8 zoom. but beacuse of its high quality of pictures of D800E, VR ssytem is enevitable.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR ($1,299.95 direct) has long been the standard zoom lens for full-frame Nikon cameras . Only recently has it been joined by a lesser-priced counterpart, the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR .

Pricey; Noticeable distortion

Fat and Overpriced

When searching for a good walkaround lens to replace my very heavy 24-70 2.8 I was surprised that many lenses are nearly as big and still pretty darn heavy, but the new constant F4 of this 24-120 intrigued me so I grabbed a copy along with the half-the-price 24-85 VR 3.5-4.5 (kit lens) and tried...

VG build; VR modes; some weather sealing; good focal range

Hilariously expensive for slow glass; big and heavy; not the sharpest at the longer end

The only lens that travels with me, when I want to travel light.

I was torn between the 24-70 f/2.8 and this one. Budget restriction and VR tipped the scale and I went for the 24-120 f/4. And what a good choice it was! I have a (brand new) D800E and the combination is awesome. The 24-120 f/4 actually delivers sharp (very!

very good image quality; autofocus is quick; VRII is excellent making it possible to shoot in low light conditions; fixed f4 aperture

distortion when shooting wide specially at 24mm although correctible

Lens gets an unfair bad rap - It's excellent

This lens gets an unfair bad rap as not being sharp at the telephoto end. I'm looking at a 20x30 print right now of a Buddha statue head sticking up out of the snow. I was probably 8-10 feet away. I can see individual ice crystals around the statue's neck, 120mm f4, D800E.

Sharp; good VR; fast focusing for an f4 lens; excellent flare control; covers 90% of what most people shoot; very quiet autofocus

Bit of wide angle distortion at wide end; at f4 more DOF than you may wish for; some examples have zoom creep issues when carried facing down; 77mm filters cost a lot; people will disrespect your lens choice - ignore them

Great travel zoom......

I own D7000. I bought this lens so that it will be a general purpose zoom lens especially during travels. On D7000 the effective focal length is approx. 36-180mm this is not a light weight lens but balances nicely on D7000.

My Standard - Hard to Take Off

While this may not be the sharpest lens in Nikon's bag. it has performed wonderfully as the standard lens on my D300 and D800, and it will reclaim that position on my D810 following the theft of my D800.

Heavy but durable and has produced some super clear and detailed pictures! Fills a needed gap in my lense collection.

Consistent Output; Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Strong Construction
