Excellent glass, high transmittance and sharpness
One stellar fact about this lens is that it's T-stop value is t/1.8. Due to the phenomenal optical design correcting aberrations with a mathematically optimal number of elements via a fast rear-focusing breakthrough, this lens is within 1/3rd of a stop as bright compared to both of the Nikon f/1.4...
I got a helluva deal!
I own a D90, which is my fourth Nikon but my first DSLR. While killing time in a pawn shop I spotted an N8008 in great condition. My eyes popped out when I saw this lens attached. I checked to see if it focused, and bought it. The camera works perfectly.
Very amazing lens for the price!!!
Very nice 85 1.8 prime lens at a great price (versus the 85 1.4 which is much much costlier). Does really well with portraits in all types of lighting. Have also used it for various outdoor applications as well as food photography which comes out very crisp and having the 1.8 aperture makes food...
beautiful lens, sharp and with wonderful bokeh. just a bit heavy but solid!
it's a great lens, very sharp from f/6.3 down to f/11 (as far as I've seen) autofocus is fast and just a bit noisier than the latest G lenses. the bokeh is beautiful. the only disadvantage is the weight, but also gives the feeling of a sturdy and resistant item. I'm very satisfied.
Another great Nikkor prime
I have a couple of zooms that cover this range but I wanted a prime for people and pet photos. This lens fills the bill with more speed and IQ than the zooms and is compact in size.- Consistent Output
- Easily Interchangeable
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
- Lightweight
- Made in Japan
- Nice Bokeh
- Strong Construction

One of Nikons best lenses also for digital cameras 800D but keep aperture ...
One of Nikons best lenses also for digital cameras 800D but keep aperture not higher than 5.6-8. It is mechanically much better than its plastic successor and almost as good optically.
Sharp portrait lens, perfect bokeh.
Over all, This is a fantastic lens with beautiful clarity and sharpness and super perfect bokeh. It is by far the sharpest lens I own. I bought it for my D80 and it worked perfectly. However, shortly after I bought a D3300, and didnt think about the fact that this lens would not work with it.
This is certainly a fantastic write-up.
- This compact, affordable 85mm prime lens is an excellent choice for portrait photography and HD video recording
- Its fast f/1.8 maximum aperture with manual control offers outstanding low-light performance, natural background blur and smooth aperture adjustments during Live View shooting.
Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D - Review / Test Report
The Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D was a very boring lens during the tests simply because it showed a exceptional performance in all tested categories. Besides the lab results the lens shows a beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus blur).
One of the best values among Nikkors
I've used both the 1.4 and the 1.8 versions of Nikon's 85mm, and for approximately half the price, the 1.8 version represents one of the best values in the Nikkor family. It actually focuses faster due to the smaller elements involved.- Consistent Output
- Easily Interchangeable
- Lightweight
- Quick Focus
- Sharp Focus
- No built in motor
- Plastic construction
