The D5 is Nikon's most powerful camera yet, aimed at pro shooters who need speed and the ultimate high ISO capability.

Extreme ISO range; 153-point AF system; Great image quality; 12 FPS bursts; 200-shot buffer; 4K video with HDMI output

Slow Live View AF; No built-in Wi-Fi; Bluetooth; or GPS

Nikon D5

But for photographers on the fence, the answer isn't as transparent. The D5 and 1D X Mark II are very close in performance, with Canon earning points for its video autofocus capability, shadow recovery, built-in GPS, and higher maximum shooting rate, and Nikon winning the battle in high ISO image...

Fast 153-point autofocus system; 12fps continuous shooting; Strong high ISO image quality; 20MP full-frame image sensor; Tough, durable build; 3.2-inch touch LCD; Clean HDMI output; 4K video capture; Available with dual XQD or CF slots

4K video is cropped; Underwhelming autofocus for video; No Wi-Fi or GPS; Omits in-body flash

Nikon D5

The Nikon D5 captures excellent images, but its 20.8-megapixel sensor trades low ISO dynamic range for excellent high ISO performance. What it doesn't compromise on is autofocus and speed with 153 AF points and 12fps continuous shooting for up to 200 images, respectively.

Excellent image quality; Excellent high ISO performance; Fast 153-point autofocus system; Fast continuous shooting speeds; 4K video recording; Pro-quality camera body; Outstanding battery life

Large and heavy body might not be right for all; Loud shutter; Underutilized touchscreen; Low ISO dynamic range not as good as predecessor; Extended high ISOs not very useful; Sluggish Live View AF

Nikon D5 XQD

The Nikon D5 is clearly a solid professional photography tool. While it headlines a new 20 megapixels CMOS sensor, EXPEED 5 image processing engine and 153-point Phase-Detect AF module, what makes it a fantastic camera is what it takes from the D4: Exceptionally fast performance and outstanding...

Clean JPEG images; Outstanding high-ISO dynamic-range; Ultra-fast autofocus; Extremely senstive AF; Very fast continuous drive with deep buffer; Extremely responsive; Ultra-short black-out; Good color-accuracy; Flexible self-timer and exposure delay; Highly customizable with plenty of controls,...

Noisy RAW files; Poor Automatic White-Balance in low-light; Bizarre Auto ISO; Limited AF-coverage; Poor Live-view; not Exposure-Priority; 1.5X crop for 4K; Highly compressed 4K; Rather bulky

The Prince of Darkness

It was a difficult decision for me to purchase a D5 after owning a Nikon D810 for two years. I am not a professional photographer but a photography enthusiast. I shoot ~100,000 pics each year at high school sporting events, concerts, etc... I love my D810 and all that it can do.

Low light king

Phenomenal pictures taken at Carlsbad cavern in New Mexico. I set iso on auto while shooting with a AF-S Nikkor 24-70 mm f/2.8 E. ED VR lens. The auto focus was great and locked onto most everything I wanted pics of.
