Nikon CoolPix S640 review

The Nikon CoolPix S640 is a standard, pocket-sized point-and-shoot digital camera. It's an ideal camera for social happy snappers, and its quick start-up time makes it great for when you need to whip a camera out of a pocket or handbag to capture a spur of the moment shot.

Nikon CoolPix S640 review

With its 12-megapixel sensor, 5x zoom lens and 2.7in screen, the S640 risks blending in with countless other mid-price compact cameras. Not every compact claims start-up and autofocus performance to rival a digital SLR, though.

Nikon CoolPix S640

Impressively fast to switch on and focus but not so nippy from then on. Otherwise, it’s an unremarkable, slightly overpriced camera.

Sorry but it's so plasticky so it is not true. Submitted my 2 times on repairs. Gently used with cover, yet loosens screws from it and now it's LENS. Total unsatisfied! Ledsen men den är så plastig så det inte är sant. Lämnat in min 2 gånger på reperation.

Nikon Coolpix S640

The Nikon Coolpix S640 is on the face of it a rather run-of-the-mill compact camera, with a 12 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens and 2.7 inch screen. That's not telling the whole story though, as Nikon are claiming that the diminutive S640 is the fastest focusing camera in its class, and even...

Nikon S640 Review

I recommend the Nikon S640 for those of you looking for something simple, yet capable. It's a decent point and shoot camera, but not necessarily one that will stand out in the crowd.

Nikon Coolpix S640 Review

Alright, I have one more Nikon camera review before I move on to other things like the Canon PowerShot S90. The Nikon Coolpix S640 is a compact point-and-shoot that packs a 5X zoom lens and supposedly "very fast AF".
Pros:
  • Acceptable image quality
  • mostly for shooting in good light, Fairly fast autofocus performance, Good battery life
  • USB charging enabled, 5X optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization (though see below, Automatic scene selection, many scene modes, elaborate face detection/portrait features
Cons:
  • Edge softness and below average image clarity, Slow lens aperture range at telephoto end, No manual controls
  • scarce on-screen display details, No HD video recording
  • optical zoom and optical stabilization unavailable when recording, Slow burst mode and below average writing times
