Nikon CoolPix S640 review
The Nikon CoolPix S640 is a standard, pocket-sized point-and-shoot digital camera. It's an ideal camera for social happy snappers, and its quick start-up time makes it great for when you need to whip a camera out of a pocket or handbag to capture a spur of the moment shot.

Nikon CoolPix S640 review
With its 12-megapixel sensor, 5x zoom lens and 2.7in screen, the S640 risks blending in with countless other mid-price compact cameras. Not every compact claims start-up and autofocus performance to rival a digital SLR, though.

Nikon CoolPix S640
Impressively fast to switch on and focus but not so nippy from then on. Otherwise, it’s an unremarkable, slightly overpriced camera.

I have been an avid Canon and Olympus camera user and finally decided to buy my first Nikon after reading the great reviews of the S640 online before it luanched in the market in Aug 2009.

Nikon Coolpix S640
Super-compact and luxurious, but sluggish in use and Canon edges it on desirability

Nikon Coolpix S640
The Nikon Coolpix S640's MSRP is $50 more than its linemate, the S570. But that $50 buys you optical image stabilization, some slightly improved shooting performance, and a couple extra shooting options.
Pros:
- Nice design
- easy to use
- excellent photo quality up to ISO 200
- improved autofocus and start-up performance
Cons:
- High-ISO settings not worth using
- no HD video

Nikon Coolpix S640 review Review
The 12.2-megapixel Coolpix S640 ultra-compact camera doesn't excel in any one area, but it's a good all-rounder that should serve snapshooters well. There's no high-definition movie mode, but its pictures below ISO 200 are excellent, it has a high-end feel and it offers decent performance
Pros:
- Good design
- Easy to use
- Excellent photo quality up to ISO 200
- Improved autofocus and start-up performance compared to other Coolpix cameras
Cons:
- High ISO settings aren't worth using
- No high-definition video mode

Nikon Coolpix S640
Featuring a flat front panel and a boxy countenance, the S640 doesn't scream anything in particular when you take it out of the box. There are no dangerous curves, no odd protrusions or quirky exterior additions.
Pros:
- Quick autofocus
- Wide-angle lens
- 5x optical zoom
Cons:
- Quick to start-up but takes a few seconds to actually initialise
- No HD video
- Noisy above ISO 400
