The ReadyNAS 212 was the first NAS I've ever bought and I've been pleasantly surprised how easy it was to set up. It comes with a very nice web interface for managing shares and their different protocols, and even has a concept of "apps" you can install onto the device itself.

The ReadyNAS 212 is a highly evolved NAS with excellent performance and a ton of advanced features. Tweakers will like the latter, but most casual users won't leverage many of these extras.

Excellent performance with supplied drives; Deep backup and media features; including on-the-fly transcoding; Remote access worked well; smoothly

UI is not especially user-friendly; Too many features and options lack adequate documentation; Front-panel LEDs are over-bright

NETGEAR ReadyNAS 212 Review

The NETGEAR ReadyNAS 212 (RN212) is a NAS aimed at home users and small offices. The NAS has two bays and a maximum capacity of 12TB, populating both bays with 6TB drives. The NAS uses a quad-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex processor that allows them to deliver real-time 1080p high-definition video...

Good overall performance; Large Block sequential faster than claimed

Some large spikes in max latency under high workloads

2 x 4Tb seagate drives installed, RAID 0 as I have backups elsewhere -improved streaming speed to rest of house - haven't measured yet but video starts faster, indexes load faster on stream boxes in house Metal enclosure is nice, fan and whole unit is quieter than old DS212j - when using the same...

quieter than my old DS212j; significantly faster too

app community is much smaller than other NAS app communities - fewer apps; - no client VPN app other than build your own command line OpenVPN afaik

Netgear ReadyNAS RN212 review

The Netgear’s physical design is very impressive, but a few issues mean it lacks the appeal of drives we’ve tested from QNAP and Synology. In particular the interface for installing and using apps isn’t the best we’ve seen, nor is the range of choices. Performance is good, but the ARM processor doesn’t quite have chops to handle 4K transcoding. It’s a good NAS, but only if you can find it cheaper than the competition.
