Netgear Orbi AC3000 Tri-band WiFi Mesh System RBK50-100AUS review

The high cost aside, the Orbi System is a sure and easy way to cover a relatively large home with high-speed Wi-Fi coverage.

The Orbi Wi-Fi system conveniently delivers large Wi-Fi coverage without compromising speed; The system doesn't require an account with Netgear to work.

The system is expensive; and there's no mobile app for its setup process.

Netgear Orbi review

Orbi might be the first mesh-based network to launch over here, but it's got some big competition across the pond. Eero has been out in the US for a while, and Google Wifi will arrive there in November.

Blistering wireless speeds; Great design; Incredibly simple setup

Beaten by much cheaper routers for everyday file transfers; QoS options are basic; Mobile app is horrific

WiFi mesh router solutions like the Netgear Orbi are designed specifically to eliminate wireless connectivity dead spots in your home or small office environment. The solution is intended to serve the requirements of a larger coverage area.

I've seen some grousing in the SNBForums Orbi threads about Orbi's $400 price tag and I suppose, rightfully so. You can buy most any AC5300 / AC5400 BHR for less, including NETGEAR's Nighthawk X8 and ASUS' RT-AC5300 . Only NETGEAR's just-announced AD7200 class Nighthawk X10 costs more at $500.

Netgear Orbi

The Netgear Orbi is a new spin on the home Wi-Fi router, designed specifically to stretch Wi-Fi coverage further than any normal router can manage. It achieves this because it's essentially two routers in one, with the second unit acting like a glorified Wi-Fi extender.

Very fast speeds at long range; Easy setup; Consistent coverage; Much faster performance than Wi-Fi extenders; Single SSID makes managing connections easy

High upfront cost; Modest feature set for power users; Not the fastest router when in close range

Netgear Orbi AC3000 Tri-Band Router Review

Kitguru Says: The Netgear Orbi is a new style of wireless router, providing reliable WiFi that can extend way beyond what a standalone single router can manage.

Covers a huge area with reliable networking; Decent performance with 802.11ac and 802.11n; Amazing 802.11ac range; Lots of useful configuration features

Not as fast as the quickest current 802.11ac routers; Relatively expensive; USB 2.0 only; which is currently disabled

Netgear Orbi review

Netgear Orbi review

The Orbi system is expensive, even given the fact that it includes both a router and satellite together. If you only have one room where the wi-fi doesn't work very well then you could save money simply by buying an inexpensive powerline adaptor or range extender for that particular spot.

Tri-band Networking : NETGEAR Orbi

NETGEAR has recently released a combination of router and satellite to help boost network traffic but you need to provide the modem.

Orbi is the world's first tri-band mesh home wi-fi system that creates a network that can cover up to 370 square metres. With the average size of an Australian home at about 215 square metres – Orbi offers enough range to easily reach every corner of your home and your front and back yards.

Easy to set up; wider range and coverage; nice design that doesn't look like a router

Expensive; large power bricks
