I haven't found a cheaper 16 port Gigabit Ethernet switch than this Netgear. This 19" rack or desk mountable switch has 16 copper ports and two SFP GBIC ports. The GBIC ports are shared with copper ports 15 & 16 - so you get to use either or, not both, which is a bit of a shame - but they do say it...
Cheap; Easy to configure
SFP GBIC ports are shared with copper ports; loud fan
excellent switch. I own two of them and love them. Low cost and high performance. The features are basic for a managed switch but work very well.
This switch has the functionality of a much more expensive switch but makes it affordable for anyone to use. I use VLAN tagging extensively and while it's difficult to set up, once it's put in place I don't have to touch it at all.
Highly Compatible
Netgear makes great dependable products and these switches are no exception. 16 gigabit ports with 2 GBIC connections for expandability. What more can you ask for. I have several of these and the 24 port model installed and working well.
I liked the fact that I can just plug it in, connect it to my existing switch panel via the 1000mbps ports, and the magic happens!! Had no issues whatsoever, even with a Dell switch in front of the Netgear. It's great when what you buy does exactly what you want it to do!
I wanted a fan to keep it cool, apparently this is v1 versus v2, I got a v2 which has no fan.
Lots of options; seems very quick
Picture has a fan; actual unit has no fan
The NETGEAR ProSAFE 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch is a reliable and fast switch. It provides great throughput perfromance for all the devices connected to it. I recommend this product.
Fairly easy to set up, will need to brush up on my networking terminology. Ideal if you need to set up a VPN, wasted if you dont have a specific need for a smart switch but i may need the spanning tree protocol on my Sonos music network as i develop/install more nodes.
