Motorola Moto Z3 Play review: The free battery pack is the best thing about this phone

The Moto Z3 Play's two-day battery life is great, but at its current price, it can't compete with the OnePlus 6. Last year's Moto Z2 Play was a genuinely likable phone with terrific battery life. It felt like a really good deal. I'm sorry I can't say the same about this year's Moto Z3 Play, which seems to have lost some of its charm -- and definitely its headphone jack -- despite having some decidedly useful features.
Pros:
  • The Moto Z3 Play comes with an extra battery pack that gives it two-day battery life
  • Its take on Android 8.0 Oreo is a pleasure to use, and the fingerprint sensor on the phone's right side is easy to reach.
Cons:
  • It's not water-resistant, and there's no headphone jack
  • It looks outdated with the mod on and costs about the same as faster phones with better specs.

Motorola Moto Z3 Play Review

The Motorola Moto Z3 Play keeps the dream of Moto Mods alive, but doesn't deliver any stunning new features. Moto Mods live on. The Moto Z3 Play continues Motorola's three-year run of modular add-ons, providing a new phone to go with your extra battery, speaker, or Polaroid printer Mods. But at $499.99 (or $449.99 on Amazon), the Z3 Play is priced on the high end of the midrange spectrum, putting it in competition with more powerful phones like the OnePlus 6. It's a solid choice if you already own or want to get started with Moto Mods, but it doesn't really offer anything new or compelling on its own. Design, Display, and Features The Z3 Play has all the sleek looks and premium qualities of a flagship phone. It's quite attractive, with a shimmering deep indigo glass back, and super-thin at 0.27 inches. However, despite an 18:9 aspect ratio, it's limited in form factor by Motorola's commitment to sticking to the same overall body shape as previous generations of the Z series in order to retain compatibility with the various Mods. Pros:
  • Works with all existing Moto Mods
  • Rich AMOLED screen
  • Elegant software build
Cons:
  • Awkwardly priced
  • Average processor

Moto Z3 Play review

The Moto Z3 Play is a charming but frustrating smartphone. Moto has improved the design, the display and the software from the past couple of years but then maddeningly taken away the headphone jack and the outstanding battery life. The price is now higher and for practically the same money you can get a OnePlus 6 that is better on most fronts and has a headphone jack. And given that Moto Mods are likely nearing the end of their lifecycle, it makes the Z3 Play hard to recommend, even at launch. If you must have Moto, then this is the best Moto phone you can buy in 2018. But where once these Play phones were genuinely unique, the Z3 Play is merely OK.

Moto Z3 Play review: 2018's MotoMod Starter Pack

The Moto Z3 Play is yet another MotoMod-enabled smartphone, with all the strengths and shortcomings that title implies. It’s difficult to be optimistic about the future of Motorola’s Moto Mod smartphone ecosystem.
Pros:
  • Surprisingly good battery life
  • Larger display with thin bezels
Cons:
  • Lacks waterproofing and headphone jack
  • MotoMod ecosystem seems to be stagnating

With this year’s HTMLTagInstance html-tag-0015b723-f64a-4e02-b9ff-d9207cd42c44 Moto Z3 Play, however, not only is it receiving a slight facelift with its design, but it’s also trekking into new territory with its higher price point.
