Microsoft Xbox Series X review

Right now, it feels a bit like we’re reviewing the Xbox Series X’s potential. Too few games have been optimised at the time of writing to really get a handle on just how good this thing is, and we’ll have to revisit the topic before the year is out. We already love the crazy-fast loading times, Quick Resume and the upscaling of older games, but we’re keen to see all those teraflops employed on a few more brand new titles, too. Of course, you don’t need to spend £450 on a new Xbox if you don’t have the gear. The Series S can do many of the same party tricks at a lower resolution, so if you’re still happy with your non-4K telly, take a look at that. We've used one extensively alongside the Series X and can confidently say that it's a big step up from the Xbox One S it replaces. And you don’t need to upgrade at all if you don’t want to, with all the brilliance of Game Pass still available to the Xbox One crowd. Though there’s something slightly underwhelming about the Series X launch - it being positioned as more of an evolution than a revolution, with Microsoft keen to move away from the idea of exclusives - this is still a monstrously powerful machine that feels truly next-gen to use. Now let’s have some more games.

Hellish load times a thing of the past ; Quick Resume is great (when it works); Ridiculously powerful ; Makes old games look better ; Game Pass is only getting better ;

Not many optimised titles at launch, and even fewer new ones ; 1TB SSD will fill up fast ; Not the most attractive design;

Xbox Series X Review

The Xbox Series X doesn’t win on launch exclusives, but when it comes to features it is an amazing bit of kit, with highlights including Quick Resume, Smart Delivery and Xbox Game Pass. These are all elements that will define Xbox for years to come, and usher in a new era of gaming with spectacular style.

Sleek and premium design is a bold departure from previous consoles ; Xbox Game Pass offers a stunning level of value; Quick Resume is a game changer for the platform ; SSD makes games and applications faster than ever;

Lack of big exclusives could turn away casual players; User interface and overall design is very familiar ;

Xbox Series X review: A next-gen powerhouse

In the Series X, Xbox has built the self-proclaimed "most powerful games console" on the planet. It is extremely fast in operation, making mincemeat of both menu browsing and loading times for games. It just needs the games to catch up to best exploit its undoubted talents.

Extremely powerful; Superfast in menus and loading times; Built to last in both body and specs; Capable of native 4K gaming at 60fps; Also supports up to 120fps gaming;

Heavy and chunky - hard to hide away in standard TV cabinets; Not a whole lot of games will make good use of its power at launch; No Dolby Vision support for 4K Blu-rays (yet);

Excellent Mini GamesPass Box!

Perfect Games Pass box for the living room TV – either as a main console, or companion to a gaming PC. Thin and light enough to be mounted on the back of a TV – It makes a great addition to a minimalist living room setup. Games load excessively fast from the onboard SSD (Which fits a fair number of games despite having about 380gb of free space), and the games run without a hitch. If you want to dip your toe into the Games Pass ecosystem, this is a perfect choice. Media apps (AppleTV+, Netflix, Youtube) work flawlessly – probably better than my 3rd generation Apple TV.

Gamepass beast

Whisper quiet, amazingly fast load times, havnt touched my PS4 since I got it. Get gamepass and have access to well over a hundred games to download and play at your leisure, the most pro consumer console you can buy right now

The best in 2021 gaming

Bought a ps5 disc version and this. After being a PS gamer for some 20 years I've sold the PS5 and am solely using the Xbox series s. This versatile machines visual capacity will amaze you, despite being more limited the game devs haven't caught up with the hardware anyway. My ps5 games barely look any different from their same versions on the S. In addition the Xbox game pass makes this such an affordable way to game, $500 console and a netflix-esc library of titles including AAA 10/10 titles, classics and NEW NEXT GEN GAMES… What. I couldn't bring myself to buy another $100 games if this is what's at my fingertips. Xbox have nailed it. This little machine is so compact and light you can put it in your backpack and get over to a mates place for some co-op goodness with minimal hassle. I'll probably upgrade to a series X in 18–24 months when the games start to keep up with the hardware but for now this machine pumps and it has all you need. Buy it!

Xbox Series X review

The Xbox Series X utilizes its powerful specs to significantly reduce load times and boost overall game performance and visual fidelity. But while features such as Quick Resume, Smart Delivery and backwards compatibility give it that extra edge, it’s hard to deny that it’s lacking in key areas – notably, significant UI improvements and captivating exclusive games.

Significantly faster loading times; Dolby Vision and Atmos support; 4K/60fps gameplay (4K/120Hz support); Backwards compatibility for hundreds of games;

Exclusive library is lacking; Minimal UI improvements; Compatible TV required for full visual experience

Stable 4K@60fps in most titles; SSD drive; Minimalist aesthetic;

It hella big; Expandable storage is expensive; Controller still isn’t rechargeable;
