PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

I didn’t know how I’d feel playing Metal Gear Survive and while it didn’t really feel like a Metal Gear game, it’s still incredibly satisfying to play both solo and online. If you ignore the microtransactions and divided fanbase, you’ll find a great game here that while not feeling like a true Metal...

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

After being transported to Hell via a giant wormhole and taking out dozens of zombies with a spear, there was a thought that entered my mind. “Was Hideo Kojima actually reeling in the craziness of Metal Gear , and keeping the series in check?
Pros:
  • Top notch gameplay, Addictive gameplay loop, Story is super weird
Cons:
  • Can be too unforgiving, So much inventory management, Not quite a Kojima narrative

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

There is a point early in Metal Gear Survive where all that I’d dreaded about it seemed to come to roost. An encounter with multiple enemies in harsh conditions with rapidly depleting thirst, oxygen and hunger meters had me stumped.

Despite losing the soul of the series, there's fun in Survive's resource-gathering base-building loop and co-op action.

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

Metal Gear Survive isn't a great game, but it is a fun game. Journeying into the Dust to find resources and survivors is a legitimately tense experience and your progress through the game feels satisfying.

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

I’ll be brutally honest, with the whole Hideo Kojima divorce from Konami, the cancellation of P.T / Silent Hills , their continued disrespect of turning beloved franchises into gambling machines, rather then you know, actually revitalise those games into remakes with the Fox Engine and all has...
Pros:
  • Can be surprising rewarding, Co-op can be a lot of fun, Base building feels somewhat satisfying
Cons:
  • Charging for additional character save slots is a dick move, even by Konami standards, Dumb, easy to exploit AI, The absence of Kojima is plain to see across several aspects, Repetitive missions

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

Metal Gear Survive is emotionally and mentally exhausting. It stacks stiff, repetitive gameplay atop survival systems that are unforgiving and unrelenting, making the overall experience feel like trying to break out of a chokehold with one arm tied behind your back.
Pros:
  • Defending against waves of Wanderers feels tense and exhilarating, Hitting enemies with weapons is satisfying, At times, the loop of gathering, crafting, and upgrading can feel rewarding, especially when improving your base
Cons:
  • Health, thirst, and oxygen deplete too aggressively, Enemies are uninteresting to the point where it's better to avoid them, Story is forgettable

PlayStation 4 Metal Gear Survive KDPS4-0115 review

Not the Metal Gear fans will be used to in terms of either quality or action. But despite a few interesting highlights, it’s just too boring to get very angry about.
Pros:
  • The concept has potential, and scavenging resources and researching equipment can be interesting. Co-op mode is a lot of fun and some effective horror moments.
Cons:
  • Dull and repetitive action and exploration, with equally uninteresting zombie enemies and a dull, humourless story. Horribly slow start, too many tutorial, and lots of drab menus.
