Leica Q2 review

There’s every likelihood that if you were actually in the market for a Leica camera, you wouldn’t really care what a reviewer thinks. I expect many of those reading this probably won’t actually buy one - they just like reading about Leica, in the same way you might like to read about Ferraris and Rolexes. That said, if you do happen to find yourself with the best part of £4,500 burning a hole in your pocket, you could do far worse than to spend it on the Leica Q2. It produces fantastic images and is a joy to use. There will always be just “something” about using a Leica that is hard to quantify but becomes immediately apparent as soon as you start using one. The Leica Q2 also has the benefit of autofocus, something which its rangefinder series of M cameras doesn’t have - think Leica quality without the unnecessary faff. There’s a few things to tempt you to upgrade if you already shelled out for an original Leica - the huge bump in resolution being the main source of temptation. 4K video recording is very nice and all, but I can’t see many buying this for vlogging. All in all, the Leica Q2 is a very expensive camera (of course it is), but it’s also a very nice one. There’s loads to drool over and if money were no object we’d definitely be buying one - for those of us that live in the real world, it’s probably not something we’ll actually be buying… nice to dream though.

full-frame sensor; Fantastic handling; 4K video;

very expensive; Very niche; Limited battery life;

Leica Q2 Review

The Q2 is a formidable camera, blessed with a bulletproof build, wonderful viewfinder and sterling image quality. Its handling won’t be for everyone, nor will the price tag or limitations of its video capture, but if you’re just focused on stills and your budget stretches to these levels, you’ll be very pleased with what you get in return.

Gorgeous design and solid build; Excellent electronic viewfinder; Sharp, highly detailed images, even at f/1.7; Very nice bokeh and out-of-focus characteristics; Lovely colours in images;

Awkwardly placed command dial; Slight corner softness at f/1.7; No integrated grip can make for awkward handling; Very expensive; Limitations to video capture;

Leica Q2 review

The Leica Q2 is nearly as competent as a fixed-lens digital camera can be. It's built very well, it handles very well, it's capable of excellent image quality and it's a joy to use. We wish Leica would address the lackluster JPEGs, but the Raw files are excellent. It all comes at a price, of course, but the Q2 really is a wonderfully engaging photographic tool that will appeal to photographers of all kinds.

Street, travel and casual photography as well as landscape photographers that make use of medium wide-angle lenses.;

Sports and action photographers that require longer focal lengths, and those that require a more robust video feature set;

Leica Q2 Review

The Leica Q was one of our favorite cameras when it was released in 2015. The concept is simple—a bright, sharp, wide-angle lens, paired with a full-frame image sensor, in a body small enough to pack for travel, but not too small where handling is compromised. Its sequel, the Q2 ($4,995), adds weather protection, upping the appeal as a travel camera, and just about doubles the sensor resolution, giving you plenty of room to crop shots from the 28mm f/1.7 lens. It's expensive, but it also delivers the level of quality you expect from Leica, and earns our Editors' Choice. Small Design Changes The Q2 doesn't stray far from the look and feel of the original Q, with the same basic form factor. It measures 3.2 by 5.1 by 3.6 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.6 pounds. It's made in Germany and features a sturdy metal exterior shell, wrapped in a leatherette. Similar Products Leica Q (Typ 116) $8,988.00 See It at Amazon Read Leica Q (Typ 116) Review ...

Leica's pricey Q2 camera marries a superb lens to a high-resolution image sensor and puts it all in a travel-friendly, weather-sealed package.

High-resolution full-frame image sensor; Quick, accurate autofocus; Bright, sharp lens; Optical stabilization; IP52 weather protection; Big, sharp EVF; Up to 20fps capture; 4K video; Wi-Fi

Expensive; Doesn't track subjects at top burst rate; No flash
