Leica is a refreshingly unusual company in the modern camera industry – weird, wonderful, gleefully anachronistic but never, ever, boring. As such, Leica is one of those companies that I've always enjoyed writing about.

One of the many pressures put on camera manufacturers today is the need to overload new models with all the latest technology to make them appeal to a mass-market audience. One camera that did just that was the Leica M (Typ 240) .

Leica has introduced a new rangefinder camera to its legendary M series. Rangefinders use a style of focusing that was first introduced over a century ago, with focus achieved by converging the views taken from two windows mounted on the front.

If you don't follow Leica M cameras closely, it might be hard to understand what the fuss over the M10 is about. But for those who do, the new camera represents a big step forward.

Even Leica admits the M10 is ‘not a camera for everyone'. Given its price tag and the ‘exceptionally lean handling concept' it provides, we feel only those who are fans of Leica's M-series will lust after this camera.

I never bonded with the M240. I loved my M9 but was frustrated with low light/ISO and lack of EVF. Pics have more of an M9 feel with the M10 which I love. When I first read about the camera being thinner I was thinking -so what Well it really does make a difference to the shooting experience.

When briefed on the Leica M10P, I was proven that it is the quietest Leica camera ever made. In fact, it boasts the quietest mechanical shutter that we've ever worked with. Photojournalists are amongst those who would value something like this coupled with the WiFi capabilities and the touch screen...

The M10-P looks more like a classic Leica from the 60s than the standard edition of the M10. For some shooters that's enough to justify the premium. For me, the biggest upgrade here isn't the aesthetics or the touch screen, but the new shutter.
