Kindle Paperwhite 4 32GB (2018)

The Kindle Paperwhite 4 retains some favourite features, and introduces some cool new ones. It's a winning combination!

Why change a winning display?

The display on previous Kindles has always delivered crisp and laser-quality text, so it's no surprise to see the same winning formula on the Paperwhite 4: 1448 × 1072 px, 6-inch E-Ink Carta touchscreen offering 330 ppi pixel density.

A smoother look

The smooth glass front and slim-line design make the Paperwhite 4 a very cool Kindle to look at. The thinner design also means this new Kindle is slightly lighter than its predecessor, coming in at a very easy-to-hold 182 grams.

More water resistant

One of the biggest improvements in the Paperwhite 4 is the water resistance. The IPX8 rating means this device can withstand immersion in 2 metres of fresh water for 60 minutes. Reading on the beach, by the pool, or in the bath, is a much less fraught affair thanks to this higher rating.

It’s grown a Bluetooth

Another new feature in the Kindle Paperwhite 4 is the Bluetooth module that lets you listen to Audible audiobooks.

You wanted more storage...you got it

There were lots of requests for the 4th generation Kindle Paperwhite to have increased internal memory or offer different versions based on memory size. Your wishes have been granted! The 8 GB version allows you to download thousands of ebooks, or some 30 – 40 full-length audiobooks in standard quality, while the 32 GB version gives you virtually unlimited ebook storage, and the ability to download at least 150 Audible audiobooks.

For the last two years I’ve been more than happy with my Kindle Keyboard (3) 3G and haven’t seen the need to upgrade to any of the newer Kindle versions. Smaller size or touch interface never seemed to be a driving factor to warrant spending the extra money on an “upgrade”.

To say that Amazon has been the single most powerful catalyst in the ebook revolution would not be an exaggeration. Before the introduction of the Kindle , many who adored the printed page universally scoffed at ebook readers, claiming that such devices would never replace the traditional reading...

The Kindle Paperwhite is a great addition to the Amazon e-reader stable, with the same impressive battery and e-ink screen but a handy light added to the touch display. But there are a few niggles around the interface and Amazon eco-system, and we wouldn’t say 3G support is worth the extra outlay.

In-built light; e-ink touchscreen; battery life

Unintuitive interface; tied into Amazon books eco-system; expensive for 3G

If you're yet to buy an ereader there's a lot to like here. The improvements are small, but significant enough to make this the best Kindle yet and the best ereader around. If you already have a Kindle 4 or below, it's probably worth upgrading for the bonus of that night light.

More responsive touchscreen; Faster page turns; Unrivalled library and ease of
