Jaybird X4 Review

In the X4, Jaybird solved some of the biggest issues that people complained about in the company's previous models. With that, we really appreciate Jaybird for listening to their customers' feedback. In fact, there's a lot of improvement in these earbuds.

Jaybird X4 review: The newest iteration is better for a reason

The new standard.

Decent sound; IPX7 rating; Better fit than previous versions

Kind of uncomfortable; Mids are lacking in clarity; Battery life is good; but still falls just short of the claimed 8 hours

Every year Jaybird, like many companies, updates their existing products. For the last four years, we've seen them make upgrade after upgrade to their X lineup of headphones, which are incredibly popular and have a near cult-like following.

Good audio quality and sound isolation; IPX7 certified (water resistant down to 1 meter for 30 minutes; Ability to customize EQ settings via Jaybird app; Solid battery life at 8+ hours on a single charge; Quick charge feature gets you 1 hour of playback off just 10 minutes of charging

Jaybird got rid of the cord management clips (we think this was a mistake; Fit won't be for everyone

Jaybird X4 Review

Jaybird's X series has held a position among our favorite Bluetooth earphones for over five years now. Priced identically to their predecessors at $129.99, the company's new X4 earphones bring some new tricks to the table. The waterproof in-ears feature exclusive-to-Jaybird Comply Ultra foam eartips, redesigned interchangeable eartips and fins, and a new cable cinch management system. If these sound like somewhat incremental upgrades, they are, but when your product is among the best, not every iteration needs to reinvent the wheel. In terms of audio quality, Jaybird's free app offers customizable EQ, so you can lock in whatever sound signature you desire, from pounding bass to austere flat response. The X4 earphones are incredibly versatile, and earn our Editors' Choice for exercise-focused in-ears. Design Available in black, glacier white, or jade, all X4 models feature metallic accents and can be worn over the ear, with the cable behind the neck, or with the cable dropping belo...

The wireless, exercise-focused Jaybird X4 earphones are supremely versatile, delivering booming bass or balanced audio depending on your EQ preferences.

Jaybird X4 review: Great earbuds without much new to offer

A confession: I gave up on my previous pair of Bluetooth earbuds, Jaybird's own X2, after about a year. It wasn't their fault; they sounded good, they were comfortable, and the battery lasted long enough.

Sound quality The X4 sound really good; There's surprising oomph to the bass, New fins The updated fin style is more flexible and easier to keep clean than previous versions, IP rating They're safe in up to a meter of water for as long as 30 minutes

Goofy proprietary charger I'm more bothered than most by single-purpose cables and adapters, but come on; The charging clip is even worse than the X3's, New cinch A single cinch for adjusting the wire between the earbuds is simpler, but it negatively impacts the fit compared to the double cinch...

Review: Jaybird's X4 sport headphones win on price-to-performance

The X4 is a further refinement of Jaybird's sport earbuds, and both a solid and cheaper alternative to Apple's Powerbeats3.

Headphones for Life's Adventures

Photo courtesy of Jaybird If you're in the market for a great pair of wireless sport headphones for working out, getting active, or even for commuting, the Jaybird X4 is an excellent option. I honestly could not come up with any downsides.

Excellent fit; Great sound; Good battery life; Waterproof

The app could use improvement; since you need Spotify Premium to play music through it
