The Huawei Mate 9 is sure to become a keen favourite among current & future fans of the brand. With a brilliantly crisp IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, this Smartphone delivers excellent display abilities (a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels) on its larger-than-average 5.9-inch screen area. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, making it robust enough to take along on hikes, bike rides or running sessions.

In terms of functionality, the Huawei Mate 9 runs on the latest Android version (Nougat/version 7.0). The CPU is an Octa-core 4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53. This makes the device run smoothly through all your apps, storage file navigation, chat applications and internet browsing. Onboard storage is large, at 64GB, and you can add another (up to) 256GB MicroSD if your onboard storage gets filled up. Furthermore, the Huawei Mate 9 runs on a super-fast RAM of 4GB. Transitional navigation is not only quick, but smooth too.

Camera functionality on this phone is a treat. You’ve got a dual 20MP (plus 12GB) primary camera together with a dual-LED dual tone flash. Additional camera features include Leica optics, phase detection and laser autofocus. The secondary camera is also highly responsive at 8MP. If all those features don’t impress you, perhaps you’ll be more enticed by the video capabilities of this phone; which boast two settings of 2160p@30fps and 1080p@30/60fps.

Huawei Mate 9 full in-depth smartphone review

It succeeds in the three key areas required of smart phones: battery, performance and camera. As such it's great value at $999. However, the camera can struggle in basic low-light conditions. We hope this will get fixed down the line. Here’s a phone we’ve looked forward to reviewing. The Mate 7 was our phone of 2014 and the Mate 8 was in our Top 5 best phones of 2016. We’ve reviewed many middling phones of late so we’ve been hoping that Huawei’s new flagship would impress us. It didn’t get off to a great start. We’ve associated the Mate range with outstanding value but the Mate 9’s price has inflated to into premium territory to match the market rather than undercut it. So did it bring anything new to the table to justify the inflated price?
Pros:
  • Great battery
  • Very fast
  • Good value
  • Potentially-amazing camera
Cons:
  • Potentially-disappointing camera

Huawei Mate 9 review

A Mate phone won’t be for everyone, but surely just about everyone will have to concede that Huawei has done a fantastic job here. If Apple made a phone with a screen this big in the image of the iPhone 7 Plus, it’d be the size of a small sled, but the Mate 9 is bizarrely usable. It also has a fun yet versatile camera, decent battery life, bucketloads of power and a healthy shot at the “Netflix phone of the year” award. If that exists. A slight lack of design flair, fairly high price and the usual Huawei software quirks keep it off full marks, but if you want a phone that’ll keep you entertained on long journeys this mini cinema of a mobile is worth a very close look.
Pros:
  • Great screen-to-size ratio
  • Gadget-packed camera
  • Seriously powerful CPU and GPU
Cons:
  • Not as striking as some rivals
  • Battery spec is better than real battery stamina
  • AAA price

Huawei Mate 9 Preview

If you think bigger is better, the Huawei Mate 9 fills the gap for super-big-screen Android phones in the US. There's a big hole in the Android phone lineup right now, and the Huawei Mate 9 aims to fill it. This 5.9-inch phablet clearly hopes to win over the million lost souls forced to drop their Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and aims to do so with a big screen, a metal unibody design, and a few intriguing software features. While we don't yet know about pricing or exact availability, we got an early look at the Mate 9 at a briefing in New York. Availability and SizeOne thing we do know about the Mate 9's availability is that it will be sold in the United States. That's unusual for Huawei. While the company is currently the world's third-largest smartphone maker, with a global market share approaching 10 percent, its flagship P series and Mate series phones have been absent from the US for two years now. The company's most successful US phone so far has been the Nexus 6P, produced with Google. That said, we don't have a launch date or price for the Mate 9. Those will come soon, but not now, a...
Pros:
  • Big screen
  • Dual cameras for sharper images
  • Large battery
  • IR blaster

Huawei Mate 9 review

Huawei’s Mate 9 is, in our opinion, the best in the Huawei line-up, boasting an impressively large battery alongside powerful internals, an improved dual-camera setup and a sleek, gorgeous design. The benchmark results were some of the best we've seen, bringing excellent value for money. EMUI 5 makes a huge difference to the overall experience too, and we can’t wait to see whether Huawei’s new technology will actually improve the performance of the smartphone over time.
