HTC One X review

The HTC One X is a superb all-round smartphone offering smooth performance, a stunning screen and a nifty camera, albeit with only a day's worth of battery life. It's easily the best Google smartphone of the year to date.

We can point to a few niggles here and there: no camera button, no visual indicator to show when a shot has been taken, the frequent appearance of an ugly ‘Menu' button on non-ICS optimised apps (partly a result of HTC's decision not to use virtual buttons like on the Nexus), the placing of the...

HTC One X

The HTC One X might have a couple of minor niggles but that doesn't detract from what is a brilliant top-performing and fully-featured Android smartphone.

The HTC One X might have a couple of minor niggles but that doesn't detract from what is a brilliant top-performing and fully-featured Android smartphone.
Pros:
  • Polycarbonate seems to be the in thing these days
  • It's what the HTC One X is made of, giving it a smooth, sexy finish, especially in white
  • Its unibody build ensures a solid feel: one that feels good to hold
  • For a phone with a large 4.7-inch screen it feels surprisingly nimble.
Cons:
  • Unfortunately the HTC One X's screen isn't as impressive as Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus panel, losing points in contrast
  • Blacks also do not come out quite as well either
  • Navigating can also feel a little old school, with nav' buttons appearing as capacitive keys below the screen instead of being...

HTC One X: The Fastest Android Yet

Let's see now… how do you talk about a phone that's already been talked about so often that most details would just appear repetitive? The HTC One X, the first of its kind in the mobile kingdom, is slated to be the apparent game-changer in the new-age, high-speed, mobile arena.

Straight out of the box, the One X is sporting HTC's familiar curves and is dominated by a 4.7-inch screen, almost giving it the appearance of a small tablet. As with most smartphones these days, the face is sleek with clean lines and minimal fuss and with no physical buttons on the face, it has a...

HTC One X Camera Review

The HTC One X has much to offer the photo enthusiast who wants pre- and post-exposure image control without buying third party apps. Camera operation is quick and responsive and the 4.7 inch display is a pleasure to use. The biggest flaw is mediocre low-ISO image quality which is not quite on par with the likes of the iPhone 5 and far from the class-leading Nokia 808. And the lack of a physical shutter button makes the picture-taking process more awkward than it needs to be.
Pros:
  • Large 4.7-inch LCD with good visibility in bright sunlight
  • Fast F2.0 lens
  • Good high ISO image quality
  • Comprehensive camera settings offer manual controls without buying a third-party app
  • Quick access to the camera app, brisk autofocus and minimal shutter lag
  • Customizable post-capture filters that can be saved as presets
  • Reasonably effective HDR and panorama modes
  • Continuous shooting option
Cons:
  • Mediocre, oversharpened low ISO image quality at default settings
  • Lack of a hardware shutter button
  • Lack of shutter speed indication limits usefulness of manual ISO capability
  • Inconsistent 16:9 crop between stills and video mode
  • Panoramas are prone to stitching errors
  • HDR images display edge artifacts
  • No microSD slot for expandable storage

Review: HTC Evo 4G LTE

Is an HTC One X by any other name just as sweet? In the case of the Evo 4G LTE, a slightly reconfigured sibling of the One X, no, not quite. But almost. The One X is our current pick as the best overall Android phone on the market right now.
Pros:
  • Black aluminum and plastic, with red anodized highlights producing a distinctively menacing looking phone
  • One of the best displays and cameras found in smartphones
  • Beastly power and speed
  • HTC Sense 4 isn't as good as stock Android, but it's the best alternative
  • Who doesn't love kickstands
Cons:
  • It's called the Evo 4G LTE, but Sprint's 4G LTE network hasn't launched yet
  • The protruding camera is begging to get scuffed and scratched over the life of a 2-year contract
  • The One X is a better-looking phone

Pros:
  • Super camera features
  • Great screen
  • Very nice hardware design

  • EE coverage patchy
  • Dreadful battery life
  • Short on internal storage
